Royals Snap Rangers 11-Game Win Streak

Box Score MADISON, N.J. (October 26, 2013) - The Drew University women's soccer team lost for the first time in 12 games, falling to the University of Scranton (14-2-1, 4-0-1 Landmark), 4-2 this afternoon at Ranger Stadium. Senior Liz Loiodice (Forest Hill, Md./John Carroll) scored both of the Ranger goals in the contest.

The action was high-paced in the early portion of the game with a combined four goals in a seven-minute span. Samantha Russo made the score, 1-0 after beating the goalkeeper to the upper right corner 10:25 into the first half. Andrea Ricketti followed with the second score in the 14th minute from just outside the box off an assist from Gianna Vitolo.

Trailing 2-0 just 14:14 into the game, Loiodice ripped off the next two goals less than a minute apart from each other. Loiodice struck for the first time in the 16th minute, putting a perfectly placed lead ball from classmate Katie O'Keefe (Shamong, N.J./Seneca) into the back of the net. Just 40 seconds later, Loiodice knotted the game at two, blasting a free kick from 30 yards away past the outstretched hands of the Royal goalkeeper.

The offenses cooled off for remainder of the half until Scranton added a goal as time expired. The Rangers committed a foul with four seconds remaining in the half giving the Royals a free kick on the far right sideline. Kelsey Bacon got a head on a second chance ball that went into the left corner of the net to help Scranton take a 3-2 lead into the half.

The second half did not see the fireworks that the opening minutes of the game produced. The Royals were able to add an insurance goal the 68th minute of the match off a free kick taken right outside the 18 making the final score 4-2.

Drew goalkeeper Agata Dera (Wallington, N.J./Wallington) played the full 90 minutes in net for her 19th career start. Dera made six saves in a losing effort.

Despite the loss, the Rangers have already punched their ticket into the Landmark Conference playoffs. A win next week would guarantee a home game in the Landmark semifinals. A Drew win and a Scranton loss to Catholic gives the Rangers the top seed in the tournament and home field advantage throughout.

The Rangers will play their final regular season home game on Tuesday against cross-street rival FDU at 7:00 p.m. Drew has not lost to the Devils since 2009.
