Crusader Defense Downs Rangers

Box Score MADISON, N.J. (October 5, 2013) – After an eventful first half that saw three goals, the Susquehanna Crusaders (6-3-1, 2-1 Landmark) defense shut down men's soccer in the final 45 minutes for a 2-1 victory at Ranger Stadium. The Rangers drop to 0-1-1 in Landmark Conference play and fall to 7-3-1 on the year.

The Rangers were held scoreless for nearly 83 minutes and managed only four shots on goal in the second half. The lone goal for the Rangers came in the 7th minute when freshman Dylan Hammer (Roxbury, N.J./Roxbury) played a perfect through ball that senior Matthew Gragnano (Hazlet, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) buried in the back of the net for his third goal of the season.

Susquehanna scored the game's first goal in the fourth minute after a Drew defensive miscue in the box that led to a one-on-one for Paul Siekmann and goalkeeper Michael Reyes (Delran, N.J./Delran). The Crusaders went ahead for good 25:07 into the contest when Andrew Murphy curtailed a loose ball in the box and scored his third goal of the season.

The two defenses took over from that point forward. The two offenses combined for 11 shots on goal, with the Crusaders holding a 7-4 advantage. Reyes finished with a game-high five saves on the afternoon while Crusader keeper, Mat Salsman stopped three shots.

The Rangers will be back on the pitch on Wednesday afternoon when they travel to Ramapo for a non-conference tilt. Game time is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. in Mahwah, N.J.
