Box Score DALLAS, Pa. (November 16, 2013) – Making their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 1997, the Drew University women's soccer team (15-4-1) fell in the first round to #10 Misercordia (19-2-1) by a score of 2-0. The Cougars advance to the round of 32 for the third consecutive year.
It was the Rangers who came out of the gates firing, taking a 6-4 advantage in shots into halftime. One of the Rangers best opportunities came with 29:34 to play after being awarded a free kick. Senior
Liz Loiodice (Forest Hill, Md./John Carroll) took the attempt from just outside the 18 and rung one off the cross bar.
Cougar goalkeeper Maureen Ciccosanti was busy, making a game-high seven saves including four in the second half. Misericordia broke the scoreless tie in the 55
th minute when Megan Lannigan came up with a loose ball in the box and had her shot trickle across the goal line.
A little under five minutes later, the Cougars added an insurance goal when Meghan Artrim received a close-range pass from Kylen Smith to make the score, 2-0.
The Rangers kept the pressure on over the final 30 minutes, getting a total of four shots on goal but all were turned away by Ciccosanti. Senior
Agata Dera (Wallington, N.J./Wallington), the MVP of the Landmark Conference playoffs, made four saves in goal for the Rangers.
The Rangers 15 wins this season are the second most in school history. The women's soccer program has reached the 15 win plateau twice in the last four seasons. The Rangers had won the previous two matchups against the Cougars, most recently in 2005.
