Rangers Shut Out Eagles in Regular Season Finale

Box Score HUNTINGDON, Pa. (November 2, 2013) – The Drew University men's soccer team closed out its 2013 regular season with a 2-0 victory over playoff-bound Juniata (12-5-2, 3-3-1 Landmark) this afternoon. The Rangers scored a goal in each half, improving to 11-4-4 overall and 2-2-3 in Landmark Conference play.

Junior Michael Reyes (Delran, N.J./Delran) and the Rangers defense held the Eagles scoreless for 90 minutes, recording the team's ninth shutout of the season. Reyes made four stops, registering his seventh shutout and 10th win of the season. He lowers his season goals against average to .79 for the year.

Freshman Joseph Cereste (Kenilworth, N.J./ David Brearley) notched his third goal of the season in the 27th minute off a pass from senior Ricardo Castro (Mexicali, Mexico/Vincent Memorial). The Rangers held the 1-0 advantage all the way up to the halftime horn. The Drew defense did not allow a single Juniata shot for the first 47 minutes of the game.

The Eagles turned up the pressure in the second half, outshooting the Rangers 7-4. Reyes turned away all four shots on goal by the Eagles in the final 45 minutes to preserve the shutout. Freshman Sebastien Eta Ashu (Newark, N.J./Bard) came off the bench to score his second goal in as many games. The goal was assisted by senior RJ Voorman (Wycoff, N.J./Ramapo) and provided the Rangers with some breathing room in the 76th minute.
For the game, the Rangers outshot the Eagles 10-7 and attempted five corner kicks compared to just two by Juniata.

Despite the loss, the Eagles clinched a playoff berth thanks to a 1-0 win by Catholic over Scranton this afternoon. Juniata will be either the third or fourth seed depending on the outcome of Merchant Marine/Scranton on Monday night.

The Rangers finish the regular season with 11 wins for the sixth-straight year. With an above .500 record, Drew is eligible for a bid into the ECAC Tournament taking place the week of November 11th. The Rangers have made 19 ECAC Tournaments and come away with six titles. Their last ECAC Championship came in 2009.
