Box Score 2 FORT MYERS, Fla. (March 11, 2013) – The Drew University softball team lost a heartbreaker to Delaware Valley, 6-3 in game one of today's doubleheader and fell, 10-1 to North Park University in the nightcap. The Rangers fall to 0-4 on the season while Delaware Valley moves to 1-0 and North Park improves to 3-1 on the season.
Game 1
Delaware Valley senior Krystle Mazza single-handedly defeated the Rangers in the first game of the doubleheader. In the first inning the Mazza cracked a three-run homer that scored Jackie Wear and Emily Gerhard. The next time Delaware Valley scored in the top of the seventh inning when once again, Mazza drilled a three-run homer to put the Aggies ahead for good. The senior was 2-for-4 with two homers and six RBIs on the night.
The display of power spoiled a valiant Ranger comeback. Sophomore
Laura D'Ornellas (Lanoka Harbor, N.J./Lacey Twp.) drove in
Antoinette Tovar (South El Monte, Calif./South El Monte) in the bottom of the second inning for the Rangers first run of the game. Senior
Jeramie Barletta (Madison, N.J./Madison) sparked a two-run sixth inning by taking advantage and scoring on a throwing error after belting a double down the left field line. Sophomore
Casey Reggiani (Whippany, N.J./Whippany Park) followed two batters later with a double to left center that tied the game three.
Reggiani pitched all seven innings for the Rangers and made only two mistakes on the two home run balls by Mazza. She struck out three and five of the six runs turned out to be earned. Emily Gerhard was credited for the win for the Aggies, pitching 3.1 innings and scattering three hits.
Game 2
North Park University racked up 16 hits and was dominant from the get-go in the nightcap. The Vikings who scored a combined 25 runs in their first two games, showed no signs of slowing down against Drew.
The Vikings scored the first seven runs of the game and before the Rangers got in the scoreboard in the top of the sixth. After the Rangers scored North Park ended the game via the Mercy rule in the bottom half on the inning courtesy of a bases loaded double by Sonia Garcia.
Sophomore
Rebecca Hutsebaut (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Twp.) was 2-for-3 in the second game with the lone RBI for the Rangers. She was also stellar behind the plate, throwing out one base runner and finishing the day with two defensive assists.
The Rangers will play another doubleheader beginning with The University of Pittsburgh-Bradford tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. The will follow it with a matchup with Olivet College at 11:00 a.m.
