Box Score FORT MYERS, Fla. (March 12, 2013) – In a rematch of last year's NCAA Regional matchup, Haverford held on to a 5-3 victory today in the third game of the Gene Cusic Classic. The Rangers even their record to 3-3 and fall to 0-3 in Fort Myers. The Fords eliminated the Rangers from last year's NCAA Regionals, winning 11-9 in 12 innings.
Sophomore
Steve Kowalski (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville), junior
Mark Alessio (Nutley, N.J./Paramus Catholic) and
Al Krause (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) each had two hits in the contest for the Rangers.
The Rangers offense was quick out of the gate, scoring a run in each of the first two innings. Alessio got things rolling for Drew in the top of the first as he doubled home
Kidane Rutty (Belleville, N.J./St. Mary) to make the score 1-0. In the second inning Krause singled home
Anthony Feltre (South Brunswick, N.J./Metuchen) to put the Rangers on top, 2-0.
The Fords followed up the one-run Rangers second with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Alex Hudek and Nick Ott recorded RBI singles in the frame while Haverford took the lead on a squeeze play that scored Liscokevitz. Haverford tacked on two more runs on two infield hits in the fifth to take a 5-2 lead.
The Rangers sent six batters to the plate in the top half of the eighth inning but only managed to get one run off a sacrifice fly by
Michael Bodden (Toms River, N.J./Monsignor Donovan).
Drew starting pitcher
Alex Taylor (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick) pitched into the seventh inning and struck out four in a losing effort. Kyle Waney came on to pitch for the Fords in the fifth and threw four solid innings to earn the win. Patrick Falkoff closed out the game in the ninth, facing four batters, to earn his first save of the season.
The Rangers will have a day off on Wednesday before taking the field against another Centennial Conference opponent, Gettysburg on Thursday at 1:00 p.m.
