Box Score 2 WASHINGTON, D.C. (March 23, 2013) – Catholic University (14-6, 3-2 Landmark) took both games of a Landmark Conference baseball doubleheader this afternoon in the nation's capital. The Cardinals edged the Rangers 4-3 in game one and won 7-3 in the nightcap.
The Rangers fall to 5-6 on the season and 0-2 in the Landmark Conference. It marks the first time the Rangers dip below the .500 mark since the end of the 2011 season.
Game One
The Cardinals held off a late charge by the Rangers in the top of the sixth inning. Trailing 4-1 going into the frame, the Rangers pulled within a run on an RBI double by
Matthew Kaplon (Palisades Park, N.J./Palisades Park) and then a RBI single to center by
Mike Klinger (Franklin Park, N.J./Rutgers Prep). The Cardinals brought in reliever Chris Nee with the bases loaded and two outs and the senior got the final out of the inning to end the Drew threat. He pitched a scoreless seventh to earn the four-out save.
The Rangers got a solid pitching performance from
Alex Taylor (North Brunswick N.J./North Brunswick) who threw all six innings, allowing four runs and striking out one. Senior
Michael Bodden (Toms River, N.J./Monsignor Donovan) was 3-for-3 in game one.
Game Two
After scoring two runs in their first turn at the plate, the Cardinals blew game two open with a five-run fourth inning. The knock-out blow proved to be a two-out RBI single to right field by Pat DeToro to make the score 7-0.
The Rangers managed only three hits of Catholic starter Kevin Farley who pitched six innings, striking out four batters to earn the win.
Drew's only runs in the contest came in the top of the seventh off reliever Peter Gartland. The Rangers loaded the bases in their final turn at the plate with their first run of the contest came of an RBI walk from
Corey Mulligan (Pearl River, N.Y./Albertus Magnus). Pinch-hitter
Chris Roll (Linden, N.J./Union County Vo-Tech) drove in his fourth run of the spring by singling to right field. Senior
Neil Cashes (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank Regional) was the third runner of the inning to score as he advance home on an error on the right fielder.
Gartland settled in and struck out the final two batters to end the game, leaving a pair of runners stranded.
The Rangers will try to salvage a win out of the series with the nine inning game starting at 12:00 p.m. tomorrow.
