Mariners Take Series with Doubleheader Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MADISON, N.J. (March 30, 2013) – The Drew baseball team ended a seven-game losing streak and picked up its first conference win with a 14-2 win over Merchant Marine in game one of today's doubleheader. The Mariners went on to take the series by winning game two, 6-3.

The Rangers move to 6-11 on the season and 1-5 in Landmark Conference play. Merchant Marine evens its record to 8-8 on the season and 5-4 against Landmark opponents.

Game 1
The Rangers scored in all but one inning, including an 11-run spurt between the fourth and fifth innings. The Mariners held a 1-0 lead after their first at bat but the Rangers evened the score up in the bottom half of the inning on a Mark Alessio (Nutley, N.J./Paramus Catholic) sacrifice fly that scored Steve Kowalski (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) all the way from second. They took the lead for good in the bottom half of the second another sacrifice fly by Al Krause (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus).

Drew's offense came alive in the bottom of the fourth, as they posted six runs and knocked out Mariner starter Timothy Arner. Kowalski and Anthony Feltre (South Brunswick, N.J./Metuchen) got the scoring started with a pair of RBI singles. Freshman J.C. Rasic (Pasadena, Calif./Loyola) then stepped in with the bases loaded and ripped a double to left scoring two runs. The Rangers extended their lead to 9-1 one on a two-RBI single by Mike Klinger (Franklin Park, N.J./Rutgers Prep).

The Mariner pitching staff continued to struggle to find the strike zone and allowed five more runs in the sixth. The inning was highlighted by an RBI single by Rasic and a single down the left field line by Matthew Kaplon that scored a run.

With all the run support one could ask for, Drew starting pitcher Alex Taylor (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick) cruised to his second win of the year. He allowed only two, unearned runs and struck out two in seven innings of work.

Kowalski finished game one going 4-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored. Rasic was 3-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Klinger drove in a season-high three runs, going 2-for-3 in the opening game.

Game 2
The Mariners jumped out to a 5-0 lead after their first three at bats with much of the damage coming from a trio of doubles by Danny Collins, Keil Silva, and Joseph Policastro.

The Rangers finally go on the board in the bottom of thanks to a pair of Mariner miscues and an RBI single by Klinger to make the score, 5-3.

Warren Hartmann gave his pitcher, Cameron Stadele some insurance runs by producing RBI hits in two-straight at bats. Stadele went the distance for the Mariners, striking out 10 batters and surrendering only three hits on the day.

The Rangers will make-up a game with New Jersey City University on the road Monday at 3:30 p.m.
