MADISON, N.J. (March 30, 2013) – The Drew softball team won its 10th game of the season, defeating Juniata 16-0 in the second game of a doubleheader. The Eagles were able to take game one, 10-4 to earn a split of the Landmark Conference twinbill.
The Rangers remained even in the Landmark Conference, moving to 2-2 in league play and 10-8 overall. Juniata ended a six-game losing streak with the game one victory and are now 3-7 overall.
Game 1
After two scoreless innings, the Eagles broke the tie in the bottom of the third pushing two runs across on a sacrifice fly by Rachel Smith and by taking advantage of a Drew throwing error. The Eagles extended their lead to 5-0 in their next turn at the plate, turning three hits into three runs.
The Rangers got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI ground out by Casey Reggiani (Whippany, N.J./Whippany Park). The Rangers cut the Juniata lead down to two after an RBI double by Lexie Forsell (West Windsor, N.J./West Windsor) that scored two runs. The double was the 27th of her career, tying her for second all-time with Kerry Crowley C'08.
The Eagles however blew the game open in the top of the sixth, scoring five runs. The Eagles racked up six hits in the frame including the third of the game from Jasmine Assad. The freshman finished game one going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and run scored.
Aly Smith was credited with the win for Juniata, striking out five batters in seven innings of work.
Game 2
The Rangers jumped all over the Juniata pitching staff in the nightcap, scoring 15 of the team's season-high 16 runs in the first two innings.
Sophomore Laura D'Ornellas (Lanoka Harbor, N.J./Lacey Twp.) had a career-high four hits, going 4-for-4 with three RBIs and four runs scored. Sophomore catcher Rebecca Hutsebaut (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Twp.) tied a career-high with three hits, going 3-for-3 with three RBIs and run scored.
All nine of the Rangers starters had a hit in the contest and the 16 total hits were the most in a game this season. Senior Jennifer Mateo (Union City, N.J./Union City), Kate McNamara (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur), Helen Mustafa (Union City, N.J./Union City), Antoinette Tovar (South El Monte, Calif./South El Monte) and Forsell each put forth multiple hit efforts in the game.
Starting pitcher Casey Reggiani picked up her second win of the spring, scattering four hits in five innings of work.
The Rangers will continue Landmark Conference play on Tuesday when they travel to Scranton in a make-up game from April 2nd. The first pitch of the double-dip is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
