Box Score JERSEY CITY, N.J. (April 1, 2013) – The Drew University baseball team suffered a 12-7 loss at the hands of New Jersey City University (10-8) this afternoon. The loss drops the Rangers to 6-12 on the season and is their ninth loss in the last 10 games.
Freshman
Anthony Feltre (South Brunswick, N.J./Metuchen) went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. The second baseman has now hit safely in his last four games. Coming on as a pinch-hitter in the second inning,
Chris Roll (Linden, N.J./Union County Vo-Tech) was also 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
For the Gothic Knights, Matthew Wagner, Andrew Rivera and Nicholas D'Errico were responsible for six of the team's 11 hits. Rivera was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored. New Jersey City was able to take advantage of a season-high six errors by the Rangers.
Drew took the initial lead of the game posting four runs in the top of the second inning. Senior
Neil Cashes (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank Regional) drove in the first Ranger run on a RBI bunt to third. A batter later, Roll punched one through the right side scoring
Matthew Kaplon (Palisades Park, N.J./Palisades Park). Junior
Mark Alessio (Nutley, N.J./Paramus Catholic) capped the Drew rally with an RBI single through the left side.
After sitting down six of the first seven batters, freshman starting pitcher
Bobby Miskura (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) ran into trouble in the bottom of the third. Miskura issued two walks, including one with the bases loaded and surrendered four runs to tie the game up.
New Jersey City took its first lead of the game in its next at bat on an RBI single by D'Errico. They added one more run on a sacrifice fly to take a 6-4 lead.
The Rangers rallied in the top of the sixth with a trio of runs and recaptured the lead. Drew took advantage of a failed pick-off attempt to pull within a run and Feltre doubled in two giving the Rangers a 7-6 advantage.
After the Gothic Knights tied the game up in the bottom of the sixth, the Rangers defense collapsed in the bottom of the seventh, committing three errors. New Jersey City also racked up five hits and scored five runs, taking a 12-7 lead.
Relief pitcher Nick Demarco was credited with the win, pitching one and a third innings and allowed only one baserunner. Sophomore
Matthew Hunter (Forest Hills, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) came on relief of Miskura and was charged with the loss despite allowing only two earned runs.
The Rangers will be back on Doc Young Field tomorrow when they welcome Lehman College. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
