Box Score MADISON, N.J. (April 18, 2013) – The Drew University baseball team won its second game in as many days, defeating the City College of New York (3-22) by the score of 14-2 at Doc Young Field. The Rangers are now 13-18 on the season.
The Rangers manufactured the first run of the game in the bottom of the first. Sophomore
Steve Kowalski (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) bunted his way on to lead off the inning and stole the next two bases to get in scoring position. Later in the contest he once again stole two consecutive bags, breaking the school record for stolen bases in a game with four. Senior
Michael Bodden (Toms River, N.J./Monsignor Donovan) brought him in a batter later on a sacrifice fly to left to put the Rangers up 1-0.
Drew scored eight runs in its next three turns at the plate including a four-run fourth inning. The Rangers took advantage of seven walks and three hit by pitches issued by the CCNY pitching staff. The Rangers opened up a 9-1 lead in the fourth thanks to a
Mike Klinger (Franklin Park, N.J./Rutgers Prep) RBI single, a bases loaded hit by pitch and a bases loaded walk.
Senior
Justin Mancini (Haskell, N.J./Lakeland Regional) was beaned twice in the contest and reached base for the 19th-straight game. He is the Landmark Conference leader with 19 hit by pitches this season and ranked fifth in the country coming into this week. Mancini doubled later in the sixth and finished the day 1-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Drew starting pitcher
Dylan Baxter (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) tossed five innings allowed only three hits and one run. The freshman retired the first eight batters of the game in order and recorded three strikeouts for his first collegiate win.
The Drew bullpen finished the contest allowing only one run and three hits in the last four innings.
Leo Ruiz (Perth Amboy, N.J./Saint Joseph (Metuchen)),
Gary Clare (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) and
Francis Rossi (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) combined for three innings of scoreless relief.
Junior
Pat Lydon (Cumberland, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy) and
Rob Cortright (Franklin Lakes, N.J./Laguna Beach) each came off the bench and registered a pair of hits for the Rangers.
Drew will be off tomorrow and travel to Scranton for a crucial Landmark Conference series against the Royals. First pitch of the Saturday doubleheader will be at 1:00 p.m.
