Box Score SCRANTON, Pa. (April 20, 2013) – The Drew University baseball team swept both games of today's doubleheader with Scranton (18-15, 7-7 Landmark). The Rangers won in their final at bat in the top of the eighth inning, 4-3 in game one. Drew (16-18, 6-8 Landmark) went on to take game two by the score of 5-2.
Sophomore
Al Krause (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) was 6-for-7 with three RBIs in the twinbill, upping his season average to .385. Classmate
Steve Kowalski (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) scored two runs and extended his hitting streak to seven games by racking up three hits on the day.
Game 1
The Rangers took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning on an RBI single by Krause that scored
Justin Mancini (Haskell, N.J./Lakeland Regional). The Royals tied the game up in the bottom half of the inning on RBI single by Michael Amaturo.
After a scoreless seventh, the Rangers put together a two-out rally beginning with a Krause single. He moved into scoring position on a passed ball and was singled in a batter later by Kowalski to put the Rangers up 4-3.
Senior
Pat Rock (Cranston, R.I./Providence Country Day), who came on in relief the bottom of the sixth, sat down the Royals in order in the bottom of the eighth for his team-leading third win of the season. Junior
Alex Taylor (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick) pitched five innings and allowed three runs. He struck out four and walked one in the no-decision.
Senior
Michael Bodden (Toms River, N.J./Monsignor Donovan) moved into second place all-time on Drew's hits list by going 2-for-3 with an RBI double in the first inning. He surpassed Dave Yorke C'96 and now has 164 career hits after both games today.
Game 2
In the nightcap, Bodden once again set the tone for the Rangers offense in the top of the first with sacrifice fly that scored Kowalski, putting the Rangers up 1-0. The Royals responded in the bottom half of the inning with a sacrifice fly from Michael Gaeta.
The Rangers offense came alive in the third, scoring three runs and gave freshman starting pitcher
Drew Blanco (Edison, N.J./John P. Stevens) plenty of run support to work with. With two outs and the score 2-1 in favor of Drew, Krause drove a triple into right center field and scored Mancini and
Mike Klinger (Franklin Park, N.J./Rutgers Prep).
Blanco recorded his first collegiate win, tossing a complete game and striking out two. The freshman walked two batters and only surrendered two runs.
Klinger was 2-for-4 with a run scored in game two. Mancini was plunked in both games and now has been hit a total of 21 times on the season. He has reached base safely in 21-straight games.
The Rangers will look to complete the series sweep tomorrow in the nine-inning game. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
