Rangers Win in the 10th to Take Series

Box Score SCRANTON, Pa. (April 21, 2013) – The Rangers completed a series sweep of the Scranton Royals (18-16, 7-8 Landmark) this afternoon with a 3-2, 10-inning victory on the road.  The Rangers, winners of five-straight games, improve to 16-18 on the season and 7-8 in Landmark Conference play.

After the Royals tied the game up on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth, the Rangers scored on a sac fly of their own in the top of the 10th to go ahead, 3-2. Sophomore Steve Kowalski (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) led of the top of the 10th with a single. After a sacrifice bunt and an intentional walk, he and Michael Bodden (Toms River, N.J./Monsignor Donovan) successfully executed a double steal to move into scoring position. The next batter, junior Mark Alessio (Nutley, N.J./Paramus Catholic), hit a fly ball to centerfield deep enough to score Kowalski for the eventual game-winning run.

Kowalski finished the day going 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two stolen bases.  Bodden also reached base three times, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and walk. Alessio put together his 10th multiple hit game, recording two hits in four at bats.

The starting pitching was superb on both ends but neither factored in the decision. Drew starter Ken Myers (Stratford, N.J./Sterling) pitched into the eighth inning, scattering six hits and striking out one. For Scranton, Josh Bayzick went nine innings and struck out 10 batters. Senior Pat Rock (Cranston, R.I./Providence Country Day) came on in relief of Myers and  tossed the final three innings, allowing only three hits to earn the win.

Freshman Anthony Feltre (South Brunswick, N.J./Metuchen) singled home the first run of the ball game in the top of the third. Classmate Mike Klinger (Franklin Park, N.J./Rutgers Prep) gave the Rangers a 2-1 lead in the fifth on an RBI single that scored Bodden.

The Rangers will play on the road this week before returning home to take on Moravian this weekend. Drew will travel to Staten Island on Tuesday for a non-conference tilt scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
