Box Score STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (April 23, 2013) – Freshman
Bobby Miskura (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) tossed a complete game and struck out 11 batters in a 3-1 victory over The College of Staten Island (24-10) this evening. The two teams participated in the 10
th Annual Grace Hillery Breast Cancer Awareness Night.
Drew (17-18) scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning to help Miskura to his fourth victory of the spring. The first-year pitcher scattered seven hits and allowed only one run over the nine innings of work. Miskura is the fifth pitcher since 2000 to strike out 11 or more batters in a game.
Sophomore
Steve Kowalski (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville),
Dominic Reyes (Jersey City, N.J./Ferris) and
Al Krause (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) each went 2-for-4 in the contest. The Rangers scored three runs on 10 hits in the game and ended a 12-game winning streak by the Dolphins.
Reyes got the Rangers on the scoreboard in the top of the second inning on an RBI single through the left side that scored
Robert Auletti (Deer Park, N.Y./St. John the Baptist). The Dolphins notched the game at one in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by catcher Bryan Moreno.
The game turned into a pitcher's duel between Miskura and CSI starter John Baggs. Of the nine innings Miskura pitched, four of them were 1-2-3 innings. Baggs pitched into the eighth inning and didn't surrender an earned run.
The Rangers scratched two unearned runs across in the top of the eighth thanks to a two-out error by the Dolphins. Junior
Mark Alessio (Nutley, N.J./Paramus Catholic) made the Dolphins pay, singling home the second run of the inning, putting the Rangers up 3-1.
Miskura worked himself out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the ninth inning to seal the Rangers 17
th win of the season.
More important than the game, however, was the tally in the donation category, as the Dolphins tallied up a total of over $4,500 in funds to support CSI's own Staten Island Breast Cancer Research Initiative. The Rangers have been a part of the event for the past four seasons and annually donate the team's allotted meal money for the day.
The Rangers will have their shortest road trip of the season tomorrow when they take on cross-street rival Fairleigh Dickinson. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
