Box Score 2 MADISON, N.J. (April 27, 2013) – The Drew University baseball team (18-20, 8-9 Landmark) improved its playoff chances with a doubleheader split against Moravian College (19-17, 9-8 Landmark) this afternoon at Doc Young Field. The Rangers took game one 5-4 and were edged in nine innings in the nightcap, 2-1.
Senior
Michael Bodden (Toms River, N.J./Monsignor Donovan) went 3-for-7 with a home run, two runs scored and two RBIs. Sophomore
Steve Kowalski (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) also collected three hits, and swiped his Landmark Conference leading 22
nd stolen base in game one.
Game one
Bodden launched his first home run of the spring and fourth of his career over the left field wall in the second inning, giving the Rangers a 2-0 lead. The long ball was the team's first of the season.
The Greyhounds raced back and captured a 3-2 lead thanks to a two-run fifth inning. Ryan Luke game Moravian the lead with an RBI double to left that scored Charles Savite.
The Rangers took the lead for good, posting three runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Al Krause (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) earned a lead-off walk to start the Ranger rally and later scored on a safety squeeze by
Anthony Feltre (South Brunswick, N.J./Metuchen). RBI singles by Bodden and
Mike Klinger (Franklin Park, N.J./Rutgers Prep) gave Drew a 5-3 advantage.
Senior
Pat Rock (Cranston, R.I./Providence Country Day) came on in the fifth inning and allowed only one unearned run in the sixth to earn his third save of the season. Starting pitcher
Alex Taylor (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick) pitched 4.1 innings and struck out a batter to win his fourth game of the season.
Game two
The pitcher's duel between Moravian starter Rob Solano and Drew Freshman
Drew Blanco (Edison, N.J./John P. Stevens) took nine innings to decide. The Greyhounds were able to score the winning run in the top of the ninth inning on an RBI single by Jimmy McCarthy.
Neither starter factored in the decision but both put together stellar outings. Solano tossed seven innings, allowing only one run and struck out three. Blanco pitched six innings and also struck out a trio of batters.
Moravian closer Chris Soltys pitched two innings of relief and picked up his third win of the
season.
The Greyhounds 1-2-hitters, McCarthy, Colin Case and Matt Hanson combined for six hits and drove in both of Moravian's runs in the contest. The Rangers tied the game up in the top of the sixth on a RBI single by
Matthew Kaplon (Palisades Park, N.J./Palisades Park). The junior catcher went 2-for-4 with an RBI in the game.
With doubleheader sweep by Scranton over Catholic earlier today, the winner of tomorrow's Drew/Moravian game will earn the third seed in the upcoming Landmark Conference playoffs. The Rangers will need to win to get in and Moravian can secure a berth with a win or Scranton loss. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. on Sunday.
