Box Score MADISON, N.J. (April 28, 2013) – It was win or stay home in today's Landmark Conference finale between Drew (18-21) and Moravian (20-17) as a Landmark Conference playoff berth was on the line. The Greyhounds scored in each of their first four turns at the plate, aiding them in an 8-5 victory this afternoon at Doc Young Field.
The Greyhounds took the rubber match of the three game series and will be the #3 seed in the upcoming Landmark Conference Playoffs. The Rangers end their conference schedule with a record of 8-10, missing the postseason by one spot.
Playing in his final home game, senior
Michael Bodden (Toms River, N.J./Monsignor Donovan) went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Freshman
Anthony Feltre (South Brunswick, N.J./Metuchen) and junior
Matthew Kaplon (Palisades Park, N.J./Palisades Park) each had two hits in the contest for the Rangers.
Cleanup hitter Charles Savite and Joseph Connell combined for four hits, four runs and four RBIs to power the Greyhound offense.
The Greyhounds never trailed in the game, jumping out to a 3-0 lead on a two-out, Ryan Luke double that scored two runs. All three runs in the frame were unearned as the Greyhounds took advantage of two Drew errors.
After two more runs from Moravian between the second and third innings, the Rangers got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third. With the bases loaded and one out, Bodden singled home Feltre for the first run of the day and the next batter
Mark Alessio (Nutley, N.J./Paramus Catholic) recorded an RBI groundout to make the score 5-2.
Moravian blew the game open in the fourth scoring three runs on back-to-back doubles by Savite and Connell.
The Rangers began their comeback in the final two innings of the game. In the eighth, the Rangers sent eight batters to the plate and scored two runs on a two-RBI double by
Mike Klinger (Franklin Park, N.J./Rutgers Prep) to make the score, 8-4. Drew loaded the bases up again in the ninth but managed only one run on a RBI hit by pitch by
Justin Mancini (Haskell, N.J./Lakeland Regional). The hit by pitch was Mancini's 24
th of the season which is tops in the country and one shy of the school record held by Assistant Coach
Tom Murray.
Bret Wagner came on in relief, pitching six innings allowing four runs and striking out one. Wagner came in for starter Thomas Mariano who left the game in the bottom of the second inning after getting hit on the arm by a line drive.
Freshman
Bobby Miskura (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) held the Greyhounds in check over the final five innings, not allowing a run and scattering five hits.
The Rangers will conclude their season on Tuesday afternoon when they travel to Allentown, Pa. for a non-conference tilt with Muhlenberg. First pitch is schedule for 4:00 p.m.
