Mancini Ties School Record in Loss to Muhlenberg

Box Score ALLENTOWN, Pa. (April 30, 2013) – The Drew University baseball team finished the 2013 season today with a 9-2 loss at the hands Muhlenberg (20-19). The Rangers end the year with a record of 18-22.

The Rangers had senior-laden lineup in today's contest but were led at the plate by sophomore Steve Kowalski (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) who went 3-for-4 with two runs scored. He also swiped his conference-leading 23rd stolen base of the season. Freshman Mike Klinger (Franklin Park, N.J./Rutgers Prep) went 2-for-4 with a walk.

Senior Justin Mancini (Haskell, N.J./Lakeland Regional) finished his Drew career by tying the school record for hit by pitches in a season. The first baseman was plunked for the 25th time this year, tying the school record held by Assistant Coach and former teammate Tom Murray. Prior to this season, the 25 hit by pitches was the 12th most ever in Division III history.

The Rangers had a tough time keeping Muhlenberg junior Nick Kennedy off the base paths. The first baseman went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBIs. Brett Rosen was also a tough out, going 4-for-4 with two RBIs.

The Mules scored the first four runs of the ball game and never trailed in the contest. Two of the first four runs came off an RBI double by Kennedy in the first inning. Rosen drove in the next two runs with a RBI single the first and then again in the third inning.

Drew got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth after Kowalski led the frame off with a single to center field. He stole second and advanced third on an error, putting him in scoring position for junior Mark Alessio (Nutley, N.J./Paramus Catholic). The designated hitter delivered with his team-leading 23rd RBI on a ground out to short to make the score 4-1.

The Rangers took advantage of another error by the Muhlenberg shortstop in the top of the seventh, scoring their second run to pulle within two runs. That would be the final run the Rangers scratched across the Muhlenberg pitching staff. Starting pitcher Nick Gies pitched six innings and allowed only one earned run to earn his third win of the season. Ryan Rechten came on to pitch the final three innings and struck out five batters to pick up his fifth save of the spring.

The Mules provided Rechten with some insurance runs, scoring five runs in their final two turns at the plate.
