Box Score 2 MADISON, N.J. (April 6, 2013) – Juniata (8-15, 4-6 Landmark) built two early leads and captured both games of a doubleheader with the Drew baseball team today. The Eagles cruised to a 12-3 victory in game one and recorded their second shutout of the season with a 7-0 win in the nightcap.
The Rangers fall to 7-15 on the season and are now 1-7 in Landmark Conference play. Juniata is now 12-5 all-time against Drew in a series dating back to the inception of the Landmark Conference.
Game 1
The Eagles put the game out of reach early, scoring a season-high 10 runs in the first inning. Juniata sent 15 batters to the plate in the first frame and racked up 10 hits. The Eagles got a pair of doubles, one by Kyle Pannebaker and another Jimmy Szamski that scored a total of three runs. Juniata also recorded two triples that scored another three runs.
Juniata starting pitcher, Joe Sforza had an outstanding day on the mound and at the plate. The junior tossed five innings, allowing three runs and struck out two to earn the victory. At the plate he was 4-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored. He also belted a solo homer in the sixth inning.
The Rangers rallied for two runs in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by
Al Krause (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) and a bases loaded walk issued to
Michael Bodden (Toms River, N.J./Monsignor Donovan) to make the score, 11-3.
Freshman
Nate Brown (Needham, Mass./Needham) pitched effectively in relief for the Rangers, throwing four innings of three-hit baseball.
Game 2
Juniata got off to another hot start in the nightcap, plating three runs in the top of the first inning. With two outs, the Eagles strung together four-straight singles, to take a 3-0 lead.
Eagles starting pitcher Chris Fulton allowed only four hits and pitched a complete game shutout. The sophomore struck out four batters and only walked two to earn his second victory of the spring.
Ben Mersky was 3-for-4 with two runs scored, two stolen bases and RBI for the Eagles. Sforza went deep for the second time on the day, with a solo homer in the seventh inning. Sforza, Cole Walters and Brad Medellin each recorded multiple-hit efforts for Juniata.
Junior
Mark Alessio (Nutley, N.J./Paramus Catholic) went 3-for-4 on the day for the Rangers.
The Rangers will look to salvage the series in game three tomorrow at noon on Doc Young Field.
