Cardinals Tally a Pair of Wins Against Rangers

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 6, 2013) – The Drew University softball team lost both games of a Landmark Conference doubleheader this afternoon to Catholic University (12-8, 2-2 Landmark). The Cardinals shutout the Rangers, 5-0 in game one and won the second game, 4-2.

The Rangers have dropped the last six games, all on the road, falling to 10-14 on the season and 2-6 against Landmark Conference opponents.

Game 1
Catholic starting pitcher, Kerri Apicella, was able to hold the Rangers scoreless for only the fourth time this season. The junior pitched all seven innings, striking out four and walking none.

The Cardinal offense slowly chipped away at Drew ace, Laura D'Ornellas (Lanoka Harbor, N.J./Lacey Twp.). Catholic got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Taylor Stockinger. The senior third baseman was 2-for-3 in the contest with an RBI and a run scored.

D'Ornellas fired a pair of scoreless innings in the second and third before the Cardinals scored four runs over their final three at bats. Catholic loaded the bases in the top of the fifth and made the score 3-0 when Christy Sanchez was hit by a pitch. The next batter, Erin Lockwood, pushed the lead to 4-0 with a sacrifice fly to right.

The Rangers could not manage to push runners across, leaving eight runners on base including three in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Senior Jeramie Barletta (Madison, N.J./Madison) was 2-for-3 in the game, recording her ninth multiple-hit game of the season.
Game 2

In the nightcap, Catholic scored the first four runs of the game in the fourth and fifth innings. The Cardinals scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by Sanchez and two-RBI double by Tori Marcavage.

The Rangers responded in the top half of the sixth with two runs on two hits. Rebecca Hutsebaut (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Twp.) scored on a fielder's choice by Helen Mustafa (Union City, N.J./Union City). The next batter, Casey Reggiani (Whippany, N.J./Whippany Park) singled home Mustafa to cut the Cardinal lead to 4-2. Reggiani went 2-for-3 on the day and drove in her 13th run of the season.

Apicella came on in relief for the Cardinals in the sixth and then sat down the Rangers in order in the top of the seventh to preserve the Catholic victory.

The Rangers will look to rebound on Wednesday when they welcome Muhlenberg to Madison. The Rangers will be hosting their Second Annual Strikeout Cancer Game with first pitch of the doubleheader at 3:00 p.m.
