Box Score MADISON, N.J. (September 18, 2013) – It took all nearly 102 minutes of soccer but the Rangers prevailed, 2-1 in double overtime against Muhlenberg (4-2) this evening in Ranger Stadium. Freshman
Dylan Hammer (Roxbury, N.J./Roxbury) knocked in the game-winner with 8:16 left in the second extra session.
For the Rangers the win is the sixth-straight after dropping the season-opener and moves them to 6-1 overall. The game-winner from Hammer was his third of the season, moving him into a tie for the team lead. All three of his goals this season have been game-winners.
In the final play of the game, senior
RJ Voorman (Wycoff, N.J./Ramapo) had his long shot ricochet off a Muhlenberg defender and fall to the foot of Hammer who was waiting on the far post.
Drew went into the second half trailing, 1-0 thanks to an early Muhlenberg goal by Lance Dotzman. The physical contest saw the action heat up in the second half as the two teams fired 16 shots on goal. Of the nine shots by the Rangers in the final 45 minutes of regulation, none was more important that the score by
Ricardo Castro (Mexicali, Mexico/Vincent Memorial) in the 50
th minute. Castro rattled home his second score of the fall, tying the score up at one.
Castro nearly won the game for the Rangers in the first overtime when he rung a long chip off the crossbar with just 18 seconds remaining. The Rangers held a 17-12 edge in shots in the contest while both teams attempted seven corner kicks.
Junior
Michael Reyes (Delran, N.J./Delran) played all 102 minutes and was credited with his sixth win of the season after making three saves. Mule netminder, Ellison Heil made a game-high four saves in a losing effort.
The Rangers will have the weekend off before they wrap up their three-game homestand next Wednesday against Eastern at 7:00 p.m.
