TOWSON, Md. (January 12, 2014) – The Drew University swim teams were back in action for the first time in the New Year with a Landmark Conference tri-meet with Merchant Marine and Goucher College.
The Drew women earned a split in the meet, defeating Goucher 71-24 and falling to Merchant Marine, 59-36. The Ranger women are now 3-6 on the season and 2-3 in the Landmark Conference. The Drew men fell to both the Gophers and the Mariners on the day. Merchant Marine came away with a 55-33 victory while Goucher defeated the Ranger men, 52-36.
Senior
Mariel Schwinger (Los Angeles, Calif./Sherman Oaks) was a double-winner on the day, winning the both of the meet's long distance freestyle events. She claimed first in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 11:33.47. She repeated her performance in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:35.66.
Freshman
Tori Braun (Pittstown, N.J./North Hunterdon) was the only other first place finisher for the Rangers in the meet. She touched first in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:05.28.
Seniors
Alexa Morrissey (Brooklyn, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall Academy) and
Jess Harrington (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) helped the Rangers rack up the points, placing second and third in the 50 freestyle respectively. Morrissey posted a time of 26.72 and right behind her was Harrington with a time of 26.73.
For the men,
Austin Goetjen (Simsbury, Conn./Avon Old Farms School) strung together a pair of good swims. The senior placed second in both the 50 free (24.54) and the 100 backstroke (1:03.16).
The Ranger swim teams will be home next Saturday to host Juniata and Mount Saint Vincent College. The meet is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at F.M. Kirby Pool.
