Rangers Fall to Mariners, 2-1, in Double Overtime

Box Score MADISON, N.J. (Oct. 22, 2014) – The Drew University men's soccer team fell to The United States Merchant Marine Academy by a score of 2-1 in double overtime in Landmark Conference action on a windy and rain-drenched Wednesday evening.

The Mariners (9-7-1, 5-2 Landmark Conference) erased a 1-0 deficit with a goal in the 64th minute and got the Golden Goal two minutes into the second overtime period. The win moves USMMA into first place in the conference with one game to play, while Drew (7-5-5, 3-2-1) finds itself in a four-way tie for third place with 10 points and two games to go in the 2014 season.

Drew opened the scoring in the fourth minute after a pair of corner kicks. Freshman midfielder Benjamin Audi lofted a corner high over the defense and towards classmate Eduardo Martinez, who used his 6'2" frame to head one over the goalie's reach. A Mariner defender attempted to kick the ball clear but it was deemed past the goal line, resulting in the first goal of Martinez's career and a 1-0 Rangers lead.

The Mariners increased their attacking towards the end of first half. They coaxed two corners but sent the succeeding shots over the crossbar. The Mariners' other tries wound up in the teeth of the Ranger defense. The game remained under Ranger control for the majority of the first half. Drew outshot Merchant Marine 10-7 and put seven shots on goal to the Mariners' one.

In the 67th minute, the Mariners had their most significant scoring chance of the game. The wing streaked down the side and into the box. They then took a shot that slammed off the post. A rebound was collected but pushed away by senior goalkeeper Michael Reyes.

On the ensuing corner kick, a loose ball was collected by a Mariner attacker, who pushed it on to another forward. The following shot then eluded Reyes and knotted up the score at 1-1.

With eight minutes remaining Drew had another scoring chance when the Mariner goalie punched out a long lob and Audi streaked in and took a shot that deflected off the goalies hand, and then the post. The shot on goal would be either team's last legitimate scoring opportunity and the game would head to overtime.

Two minutes into the second overtime period a Mariner striker collected a diagonal lead pass and buried it to clinch the victory and the first place standing on top of the Landmark Conference table for Merchant Marine.

The Rangers will square off against Elizabethtown College on Saturday, Oct. 25 at 1:00 p.m. in Pennsylvania in another Landmark Conference contest before the regular season finale on Saturday, Nov. 1 at 1:00 p.m. against Moravian College at Ranger Stadium.
