Reyes Saves 1-0 Win at E-Town After Martinez's Goal

Box Score ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. (Oct. 25, 2014) – In a fierce battle for Landmark Conference playoff positioning, a simple bounce of the ball and superb goalkeeping by senior Michael Reyes separated the Drew University men's soccer team and Elizabethtown College as the Rangers won 1-0 on freshman midfielder Eduardo Martinez's goal in the 55th minute.

Following a Rangers (8-5-5, 4-2-1 Landmark Conference) free kick, the Elizabethtown (7-5-2, 3-3-1) goalie punched the ball out. Martinez headed the ball back toward the goal line at the perfect time as the Blue Jays goalie was still down and the ball took a deflection off a defender and into the goal for the only tally of the contest. It Martinez's second career goal, and the second score this week both against Landmark Conference opponents.

In other Landmark Conference action, The United States Merchant Marine Academy (6-2) and The Catholic University of America (5-1-1) locked up playoff spots and have clinched home field advantage in the Landmark semifinals on Wednesday, Nov. 5. With only two spots up for grabs, the Rangers currently sit in third place with 13 points and looking back at a four-way tie for the fourth and final playoff spot. A Drew victory on Saturday, Nov. 1 against Moravian College at home would ensure a trip to the Landmark semifinals.

Reyes did his part to hold the slim lead with six quality saves to record his 26th career shutout at Elizabethtown. The Rangers were outshot 12-9, and the senior keeper was called on for a clean sheet to allow Drew to leave Pennsylvania with the victory. After the Blue & Green took the lead, Reyes made back-to-back stops in the 72nd minute and added another in the 81st with late-game pressure building.

"As we get closer to the end of the season and needing wins to make the playoffs, his play becomes more and more important," said head coach Lenny Armuth. "He did today what he's done all season, and that's come up with big saves in big spots. We know there's still work to do, and Reyes and the defense helped us go into the week with momentum as we prepare for Moravian."

The sequence in the 72nd minute nearly equalized the score for the Blue Jays. The initial header off a corner kick clanged off the crossbar and Reyes rebounded to make the ensuing saves after the woodwork aided his cause.

Reyes' play was crucial as his offense put three shots on goal during the Landmark contest, two by sophomore Dylan Hammer and one by freshman Benjamin Audi.

Drew's regular season finale will decide its postseason fate. The Rangers face Moravian at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 1 at Ranger Stadium on Senior Day.
