Box Score MADISON, N.J. (Oct. 29, 2014) – After being gifted with pictures, flowers and balloons on Senior Day last Saturday, senior midfielder
Melissa Boyd was in a very giving mood herself during her final home game at Ranger Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
Â
Boyd dished out three assists as the Drew University field hockey team defeated Division II Mercy College, 3-2. After Mercy (1-14) jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the seventh minute, Boyd set up three different Drew goal scorers in juniors
Michelle Fallon and
Amber De Marco, and freshman
Madi Sheetz. Sheetz's goal was crucial as it gave the Rangers (4-11) a 3-1 lead, which the Mavericks would cut in half in the 63
rd minute to set the score at 3-2.
Â
"It was a great way for Melissa to play her final game at home," said her head coach,
Felicia Cappabianca. "She has always been a team-first and unselfish player throughout her career in Madison. It's only fitting that in her last game, she perfectly sets up three of her teammates and helps us get a win."
Â
Cappabianca also commended the entire team on their no-quit attitude heading into Wednesday's non-conference matchup. The Rangers had already been eliminated from postseason contention with a loss to The University of Scranton on Monday, but that didn't stop Drew from battling Mercy like it was a playoff match.
Â
"It says a lot about this team," she said. "It was a slow start, and they could have given up. But that's not how they are. They figured it out, put some great passing and penalty corners together, and were rewarded with the win."
Â
The quick start by the Mavericks took Drew by surprise. It was the visiting team's second shot of the game in the seventh minute that was put in off a rebound. The Rangers would have the answer seven minutes later.
Â
Boyd's first assist started a first half three-goal Rangers rally. In the 14
th minute, her crisp pass found the stick of an open Fallon, who took the one-time shot and buried it in the back of the Maverick's cage to knot the score at 1-1.
Â
De Marco was next on Boyd's list in the 29
th minute. This time a long cross again was well placed to find a teammate for a quick shot, and De Marco slotted it into the right side of the goal for her fourth goal of the season and the 2-1 Drew advantage. In rapid-fire fashion, the Rangers took a 3-1 lead just 1:04 later, when Boyd set up Sheetz for her second career goal.
Â
The Rangers ended up outshooting Mercy 27-6 and held an even more impressive 26-5 advantage in penalty corner opportunities. However, the Mavericks fought back near the end of the game with their second goal in the 63
rd minute.
Â
Junior goalkeeper
Sarah Stewart, who finished with two saves, and the defense held strong to hold the slim one-goal lead to ensure a victory on the final home date of 2014 at Ranger Stadium.
Â
The Rangers conclude the 2014 season on Saturday, Nov. 1 at 1:00 p.m. with a Landmark Conference match at Moravian College.
