Box Score MADISON, N.J. (Oct. 4, 2014) – Junior forward
Emma Campbell scored her sixth goal of the season and junior goalkeeper
Sara Nash made four saves as the Drew University women's soccer team shut out Susquehanna University, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon at Ranger Stadium in Landmark Conference action.
Drew (4-6) improves to 1-1 in conference play while Susquehanna (3-8-1) drops to 0-2 after two games of league play. The Catholic University of America has an early lead in the Landmark with a 2-0 record.
Campbell's decisive strike came in the 23
rd minute when the junior star tiptoed the baseline looking for the backward angle pass into the Crusaders' goalmouth. Instead, Campbell slipped behind the defender on the end line and found an opening for a blast and the 1-0 lead for her squad.
"Scoring never gets old, especially this season," said Campbell, who notched her 37
th career goal on Saturday and stands alone in fourth place in career goals in Drew history. "We really want to work on capitalizing on our opportunities around net. That's one of the biggest focuses right now, especially in these important league games. The defender was trying to shield me out and I was able to get a touch by her. The goalie knew I was trying to pass it back out, so she stepped off the line. I had some space for a left-footed shot into the corner."
Head coach
Christa Racine admitted that while there are certain areas of the Rangers' game that still need improvement before getting into the meat of the Landmark Conference schedule, a victory will go a long way in pushing this team forward. Campbell's goal was one of the highlights of Drew's progress as a team.
"We call that goal Emma-sizing," Racine said. "She is so talented with the ball on her foot and is always willing to dribble to goal; that's one of the things that makes her a special player. We always talk about getting to the end line, and she again led the way in a big conference win."
The Rangers did well to keep possession slightly in their favor throughout the 90 minutes on Saturday and allowing Susquehanna to take just 10 shots. Four of those were on target, but Nash was there on each of them to make the save and pick up her first shutout of the 2014 season.
Drew has a quick turnaround this week with a home match against William Paterson University on Tuesday, Oct. 7 at 7:00 p.m. in non-conference action. Landmark Conference play resumes on Saturday, Oct. 11 at 3:30 p.m. when The Catholic University of America visits Ranger Stadium.
