Box Score CAMDEN, N.J. (Nov. 15, 2014) – The Drew University men's soccer team's season has come to an end after a 2-1 loss to the Richard Stockton Ospreys in the semifinals of the ECAC playoffs. Senior midfielder
Michael Pezzuti scored the only goal in his final game as a Ranger. Five other seniors would call it a career as well.
The Rangers made their presence felt early when senior midfielder
John Nogiewich attempted a shot nine minutes in that slammed of the post and out of danger.
Three of Richard Stockton's nine first half shots came in a 14
th minute flurry. An attacker attempted a shot that floated over the crossbar. Thirty seconds later, the Ospreys were back at it and attempted a shot that was batted down by the Ranger defense. An attacker then collected that rebound and tried another, same result.
A 17
th minute loose ball found an Osprey striker who countered with a shot that flew wide of the net. The score remained at zeroes.
Drew found themselves with another legitimate scoring opportunity came when freshman striker
Benjamin Audi flew into the zone and headed one forward. The Osprey keeper saved the try.
In the 37
th minute of play Pezzuti set up for a free kick. Pezzuti got a hold of it and powered a shot through the Osprey goalie. The goal was his third of the year and got Drew started with a 1-0 lead.
Pezzuti's successful strike came as a result of one of three shots in the half for the senior, leading the team.
A seemingly invigorated Osprey team took the goal as their queue to go on attack. They worked the ball into the Ranger zone and forced a corner kick. The kick was then lofted into the scoring zone where a header was put on net by an attacker. Drew's defense stood strong and registered a defensive save, bailing out Senior goalie
Michael Reyes, and voiding the Osprey try.
The beginning of the second half marked a triumphant stampede from the Ospreys. Five minutes into the half they exhausted all attempts to knot up the score, but came up empty once again. A strike was sent in by an attacker and clanged off the crossbar. The rebound got sent net bound again but was blocked by a Ranger defender. The ball got loose but an Osprey striker sent it wide left and Drew escaped unscathed.
In the 73
rd minute, Richard Stockton tied the game. A wing carried the ball in, looking for a cross. He found it and booted it high and towards the head of a striker. That player then flicked it on, tucking it inside the right side post and out of the reach of Reyes. The contest was tied 1-1.
15 minutes later the Ospreys took their 19
th shot and 9
th shot on goal. It would win them the game. A ball was nudged forward along the right side and encouraged along by an attacker. He then put it on net, sliding it inside the right side post. 2-1 Ospreys is where the contest would end.
