Box Score 2 Fort Myers, Fla. (March 10, 2014) – The Drew University softball team (3-1) swept the second day of the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic this morning in Fort Myers, Florida. The Rangers defeated in-state rival New Jersey City University, 3-2 in game one and defeated Bethany Lutheran, 11-0 in five innings in game two.
The Gothic Knights got on the board in the first inning scoring the game's first run. The Rangers countered in the fourth inning when senior
Helen Mustafa (Union City, N.J./Union City) doubled into center field driving in Drew's first run. NJCU scored again in the top of the fifth to take a, 2-1 lead. Drew once again countered in the bottom of the inning scoring two runs to take a, 3-2 lead that they would hold onto for the victory. Senior
Lexie Forsell (West Windsor, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro) led off the fifth and was driven home on a
Kate McNamara (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur) single.
In game two the Rangers only needed five innings to defeat Bethany Lutheran in the second ever meeting between the two schools. The Rangers scored seven runs in the first inning to propel them forward to the, 11-0 victory. Forsell drove a ball to center field that scored junior
Antoinette Tovar (South El Monte, Calif./South El Monte) who led off the inning with an infield single. Two batters later McNamara singled to center driving home Forsell. The Rangers scored three more runs in the fourth,
the first coming off the bat of Mustafa who hit an infield single scoring McNamara.
Freshman
Casey Zdanek (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) made her first career start for Drew in the first game. Zdanek pitched the first four innings of the game for the Rangers allowing one run. Sophomore
Kristin Zeigler (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) came in for the final three innings of the game to pick up her second win of the season. Freshman
Emma Agostini (Centereach, N.Y./Centereach) made her first start on the mound for the Rangers this season in the second game. The freshman went all five innings, surrendering one hit and striking out one Bethany Lutheran batter.
The Rangers return to the field tomorrow March 11 at 9:00 a.m. as they face University of Pittsburgh-Bradford in game one on the third day of the Cusic Classsic. Drew faces Bridgewater State in the second game of the day, with first pitch scheduled for 11:00 a.m.Â
