Rangers Split Day Four of Cusic Classic

(March 13, 2014) – The Drew University softball team (6-2) split their doubleheader on day four of the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic this afternoon in Fort Myers, Florida. The Rangers suffered their second loss of the season to Rockford University, 5-3 in game one and defeated Mount Mary, 11-0 in game two.

The Rangers scored first in game one against Rockford in the first inning when junior Antoinette Tovar (South El Monte, Calif./South El Monte) scored on a wild pitch from the Rockford pitcher. Tovar reached first on the opening at-bat via a fielding error by the second baseman. The Rangers took a, 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third when Emma Agostini (Centereach, N.Y./Centereach) doubled into left field to score Lexie Forsell (West Windsor, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro). Forsell singled to center field with two outs in the inning. The very next batter, junior Rebecca Hutsebaut (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Township) singled into left field to plate Agostini. The Rangers surrendered five runs in the top of the fourth to Rockford, for the Regents 5-3 victory.

Drew needed only five innings to defeat Mount Mary , 11-0 in the first ever meeting between the two schools. Freshman Phylicia Pellot (Pennsauken, N.J./Camden Catholic) reached safely on a bunt attempt with one out in the first. She scored three batters later on a single to left field by senior Helen Mustafa (Union City, N.J./Union City). The Rangers added insurance runs in the second (2), third (3) and fourth innings (3) for the 11-0 victory. Pellot singled in the fourth inning to score two runs, the final runs of the game.

Emma Agostini pitched the first game for the Rangers. The freshman went 4.1 innings allowing five runs, while striking out two batters. Junior Laura D'Ornellas (Lanoka Harbor, N.J./Lacey Township) pitched 2.2 innings in relief in the game one loss. D'Ornellas allowed two hits, struck out five Regent batters and didn't allow a run. Frehsman Casey Zdanek (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) made her second career start for the Rangers in game two. Zdanek went five innings surrendered two hits and struck out nine batters in the victory.

The Rangers take the field tomorrow in their final doubleheader of the Cusic Classic. In game one Drew faces Ohio Wesleyan in game one at 1:00 p.m. and Saint Joseph's (ME) in game two at 3:00 p.m.
