Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Madison, N.J. (March 27, 2014) – Drew University softball (11-5) suffered its first doubleheader defeat of the season this afternoon. The Rangers dropped two games to William Paterson (10-2) 1-0 and 10-1.

Junior Rebecca Hutsebaut (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Township) continued her hot hitting batting .400 (2-5) on the afternoon. Hutsebaut was the only Ranger to record a hit in both games of the doubleheader. Freshman Meghan McGuire (Stockton, N.J./Hunterdon Central) went 1-for-4 on the day for the Rangers in defeat.

Game one proved to be a pitching duel between Gabrielle Castelli of William Paterson who surrendered just one hit and struck out two batters in 5.2 innings of relief ball. Junior Laura D'Ornellas (Lanoka Harbor, N.J./Lacey Township) pitched all seven innings for the Rangers in her fifth appearance of the season. D'Ornellas allowed one run on five hits and struck out three Pioneer batters. William Paterson scored the game's lone run on a single from Katelyn Miele that plated Kelsey Principe who drew a two out walk in the top of the third.

The Pioneers jumped out to an early lead in game two and never looked back. William Paterson started the scoring off the bat of Nicole Fryer who hit a first pitch homerun into leftfield in the top of the first. The Pioneers tacked on another run taking a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the inning. William Paterson scored eight more runs over the next four innings to take a 10-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth. The Rangers got on the board scoring their lone run of the game when Hutsebaut singled into right centerfield to plate freshman Vanessa Villahermosa (Woodbridge, N.J./John F. Kennedy Memorial). Villahermosa singled into centerfield to lead off the inning.

Drew returns to action on Saturday March 29 at 1:00 p.m. as they travel to Bethlehem, Pa. for a Landmark Conference doubleheader with Moravian College.
