Rangers Outlast Pioneers in 14 Inning Thriller

Box Score Wayne, N.J. (March 31, 2014) – The Drew University baseball team (6-7) picked up a 4-1 non-conference victory in 14 innings over William Paterson (5-7) this afternoon in Wayne, N.J.

In the top of the 14th inning, freshman Tommy Broyles (Eatontown, N.J./Monmouth Regional) doubled down the right field line to plate the go ahead run for the Rangers. Freshman Mike Di Donato (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) then singled up the middle to score two more runs giving the Rangers a 4-1 lead.

Di Donato anchored the Ranger offensive attack throughout the day. The freshman outfielder finished the day 3-for-5 with three RBIs. Broyles finished a perfect 1.000 on the day doubling in his only plate appearance.

The Rangers and Pioneers played to a 0-0 tie after five and a half innings before William Paterson scored first in the home half of the sixth. A sacrifice fly from Alex Dener scored the game's first run giving the Pioneers a 1-0 lead. Drew countered in the eighth tying the game 1-1 on a single from Di Donato that plated sophomore Mike Klinger (Franklin Park, N.J./Rutgers Preparatory School) who led off the inning with a single into left field.

Freshman Michael Manfra (Montville, N.J./Montville Twp.) started the game on the hill for the Rangers. Manfra went seven innings allowing six hits and striking out one batter.

Sophomore Dylan Baxter (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) pitched three innings in relief effort for the Rangers on the afternoon. Baxter held the Pioneer offense hitless and struck out two batters. Junior Matthew Hunter (Forest Hills, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) picked up his third win of the season for Drew. Hunter pitched the final four innings of the game surrendering just two hit and striking out two batters.

Senior captain Matthew Kaplon (Palisades Park, N.J./Palisades Park) finished the day batting .200 (1-5) with an infield single. With his single in the eighth inning Kaplon became only the 15th player in Drew history to record 100 hits for their career.

The Rangers return to action tomorrow April 1 at 3:30 p.m. as they travel to Newark, N.J. for a non-conference contest with in-state rival Rutgers-Newark.
