Hawks Edge Rangers in Overtime Thriller

Box Score Madison, N.J. (March 5, 2014) – The Drew University women's basketball team (13-13) suffered an opening round overtime loss in the ECAC-Metro Tournament this evening to Hunter College (16-13), 78-76. Hunter will play the winner of Kean/Lehman in the semifinal.

Freshman Hannah Miller (Rumson, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven) steadied the Ranger offense scoring 22 points. Miller shot .667 (6-9) from behind the arc, connecting on a career-best six three-pointers. Sophomore Courtney Stephens (Pikesville, Md./Gerstell Academy) recorded her fourth double-double of the season scoring 12 points and grabbing 12 rebounds in the loss.

Hunter started the game connecting on their first three shot attempts taking an early 7-0 lead with 18:24 with left in the first half of play. Over the next six minutes the Rangers countered with a 13-8 run of their own cutting the Hawk lead to two, 15-13 with 12 minutes left in the half. The Hawks continued their hot shooting to close the half taking a, 39-32 lead into the locker rooms at halftime. Sophomore Erin Howard (Tolland, Conn./East Catholic) scored eight points in the first half for the Rangers.

The second half was a back-and-forth affair as the two teams traded baskets, with Hunter maintaining a seven point lead with 13 minutes left to play in the game. Drew took their first lead of the game, 55-54 at the after a three-pointer from Miller that capped an 11-3 run at the 7:45 mark of the half. The Rangers connected on 12 of their 27 shots in the second half, forcing an overtime period.

The Hawks opened the overtime period scoring the first four points, taking a 69-65 advantage. Stephens and Miller connected on back-to-back baskets tying the game, 69-69 with 2:38 left to play. Nicole Lenard gave the Hawks a 71-69 lead that would be enough to hold off the final Ranger attack.

Kristen Maroke led the Hawks offense, scoring a game-high 28 points including 17 in the first half. Nicole Lenard played big in the closing minutes of the second half and overtime period finishing the game with 22 points and four assists.

Junior All-Landmark selection Breana Wilson (Irvington, N.J./Berkshire School (Mass.)) finished the game scoring 12 points and grabbing four rebounds for the Rangers. Erin Howard scored two more points in the second half bringing her final game total to 10. Howard also blocked two shots and grabbed three rebounds. Senior forward Logan Cavanaugh closed her career with 12 points and four rebounds for the Rangers in defeat.
