Six Run Seventh Leads Cal Lutheran Over Rangers

Box Score Thousand Oaks, Calif. (March 9, 2014) – The Drew University baseball (0-1) team dropped its first game of the season to Cal Lutheran (9-3), 15-7 this afternoon in the opening game of their spring break road trip. Cal Lutheran scored six runs in the seventh to open up a, 13-6 lead.

Sophomore second baseman Anthony Feltre (South Brunswick, N.J./Metuchen) batted 3-for-5 on the day with a double and a RBI. Junior Al Krause (Seacaucus, N.J./Seacaucus) went 2-for-3 driving in two runs and drawing a walk. Sophomore Drew Blanco (Edison, N.J./John P. Stevens) started his first game of the season for the Rangers. The Ranger right-hander went five innings conceding nine hits and allowing six runs. Blanco struck-out two batters in the loss.

Cal Lutheran jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after the first two innings. Junior Steve Kowalski (Robbinsville, N.J/Robbinsville) led off the third with a single, stealing second and advanced to third on a balk. Feltre drove Kowalski home with a single to left field getting the Rangers on the board. Drew added three more runs in the top of the fourth to take a 4-3 lead. After the Cal Lutheran pitcher walked three Ranger batters, freshman Richie Poland (Monroe Twp, N.J./Monroe Twp.) stepped to the plate and singled to right field plating three runs.

The Cal Lutheran half of the seventh saw 11 men step into the box with five collecting hits and scoring six runs. Kyle Sanchez swiped a bag for the only stolen base of the afternoon for the Kingsmen. Going into the eighth Cal Lutheran led Drew, 13-6.

Six of the 15 Kingsmen hits went for doubles with both Atherton Kniseley and Chris Whitmer recording two-RBI doubles in the seventh. Jake Petersen also had a run-scoring double in the inning.

The Rangers continue their road trip with a non-conference contest tomorrow, March 10 at 1:00pst/4:00est as they face Occidental College.
