Box Score 2 Fort Myers, Fla. (March 9, 2014) – The Drew University softball team (1-1) split their first two games of the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic this morning in Fort Myers, Florida. The Rangers defeated St. Mary's College (Ind.), 4-2 in their first game and fell, 4-3 to Wartburg College in their second game.
The Rangers needed extra innings to fight off the Belles in the first game. Freshman
Meghan McGuire (Stockton, N.J./Hunterdon Central) stepped to the plate with two outs in the top of the eighth and hit a single into leftfield bringing home two runs for the Rangers. After falling behind, 2-0 in the fourth the Rangers scored two runs in the top of the sixth to tie the game, 2-2. Junior
Kate McNamara (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur) singled to rightfield scoring a run and freshman
Emma Agostini (Centereach, N.Y./Centereach) doubled to leftfield driving home McNamara.
Drew faced Wartburg College in the second game of the day. The Knights drove in two runs in the bottom of the seventh to take home a, 4-3 victory. The Rangers scored in the first inning when Agostini singled into leftfield and McGuire was able to cross the plate on an errant. Drew scored again in the third when Agostini stepped to the plate hitting a ball back to the pitcher, scoring McGuire. The Rangers scored their final run of the game in the sixth when senior
Lexie Forsell (West Windsor, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro) doubled to leftfield scoring McGuire. Forsell finished the day a combined 5-for-6 with a double and RBI.
Sophomore
Kristin Zeigler (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) pitched the first game of the doubleheader. Zeigler went the full game surrendering six hits and allowing two runs picking up her first win of the season. Junior
Laura D'Ornellas (Lanoka Harbor, N.J./Lacey Township) pitched the second game of the day. D'Ornellas allowed four hits and earned two runs in the loss for the Rangers.
Drew returns to action for day two of the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic tomorrow March 10. In game one the Rangers will face New Jersey City University at 9 a.m. and in game two Drew will play Bethany Lutheran College at 11:00 a.m.
