Box Score Newark, N.J. (April 1, 2014) – The Drew University baseball team (7-7) picked up its second victory in as many days with a 10-7 victory over Rutgers-Newark (5-12) this afternoon at Riverfront Stadium in Newark, N.J. Today's contest marked the first between the two schools since 2005.
Sophomore
Mike Klinger (Franklin Park, N.J./Rutgers Preparatory School) finished the day batting .500 (2-for-4), scoring two runs and tallying two RBIs. Classmate
Bobby Miskura (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) finished his day at the dish 2-for-5, driving in two runs. Miskura also scored two runs for the Rangers in the victory.
"I'm really happy with the way we swung the bats today," said head coach
Brian Hirschberg on the performances from Klinger and Miskura. "There's always a couple moments when a game can turn and we expect guys in the middle of the lineup to barrel it up when the game is on the line, and they did just that."
Rutgers-Newark started the scoring in the fourth inning on a Ryan Macfarlane single that scored Michael Murray, who doubled to lead off the inning. The Scarlet Raiders added one more run in the bottom of the fourth to take a 2-0 lead into the fifth.
The Rangers countered the Rutgers-Newark two-run fourth with a seven-run fifth inning. Drew scored their first run of the inning on a single from senior
Pat Lydon (Cumberland, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy). Lydon stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded and his single drove home Klinger, who drew a lead off walk to start the inning. Junior
Al Krause (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) stepped up to the plate and delivered a single to the third base side driving in senior
Matthew Kaplon (Palisades Park, N.J./Palisades Park), who singled earlier in the inning. Drew would tack on five more runs taking a 7-2 lead into the home half of the inning.
The Scarlet Raiders would combine for five runs in the fifth and sixth innings tying the game, 7-7 heading into the seventh inning. The Rangers responded one more time scoring three runs to take a 10-7 lead they would not relinquish. A double from junior shortstop
Steve Kowalski (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) drove in Kaplon for the game's final run.
Freshman
Tommy Broyles (Eatontown, N.J./Monmouth Regional) made his first career start on the mound for the Rangers this afternoon. The freshman pitcher surrendered six hits, earned two runs and struck out two batters in four innings work. "We got a great starting performace from Broyles, he gave us a great opportunity to win the game right from the very start," Hirschberg said. "Then Nate came in and shut the door." Sophomore
Nate Brown (Needham, Mass/Needham) picked up his first win of the season for the Rangers in three innings of relief this afternoon. Brown allowed three hits, struck out three batters and held the Scarlet Raider offense scoreless.
The Rangers return to the diamond on Thursday April 3 at 3:30 p.m. as they play host to SUNY-Old Westbury here at Doc Young Field.
