Box ScoreMADISON, N.J. (April 10, 2014) – The Drew University men's tennis team continued its recent hot streak on Thursday by defeating crosstown rival FDU-Florham, 6-3, in the Battle of Madison Ave for its third consecutive win.
For the second dual match in a row, the Rangers (4-4) swept doubles play to set the tone for a victorious day. The Devils battled back with three singles wins, but sophomore
Adam Clark clinched the victory with a 6-2, 6-2 win at first singles.
It was Clark's first repetition at the top singles spot this season, and the sophomore rose to the occasion, according to first-year head coach
Matthew Brisotti.
"Adam moved up to the number one spot and played his butt off," Brisotti said. "He was also key in doubles sweeping again. It was the second match in a row we had a huge leg up going into singles. FDU was tough, but our guys were up for the challenge."
Clark and junior
Scott Vander Veen teamed up for an 8-4 win at second doubles. Senior
Vin Mahon and junior
Tommy Butschi outlasted their Devils opponents at first doubles, 9-8, after winning the pressure-packed tiebreaker 7-4.
Junior
Dereck McMullen and freshman
Nick Lantieri completed the clean sweep of doubles with an 8-3 victory at the third position.
Mahon took care of business at third singles for a perfect 6-0, 6-0 win, while Lantieri picked up his fourth win of the year at sixth singles thanks to a 6-0, 6-1 defeat of his FDU-Florham foe.
The win positions the Rangers to head back into conference play with a head of steam. With a 3-2 mark in conference play, Drew has its eye on clinching a playoff spot this weekend with a dual match at Juniata College.
"They're up for the pressure," Brisotti said. "There are plenty of veterans on the team that know what it's like to play big matches at the end of the season. It's good we have experience on our side, and that should trickle down to the whole team."
First serves are scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 12 at Juniata. The regular season concludes one week from today with a home match against The Catholic University of America.
