Box Score 2 MADISON, N.J. (April 12, 2014) – The Drew University softball team ran into two powerful pitching performances while falling in both games of a Landmark Conference doubleheader to The Catholic University of America on Saturday afternoon in Madison.
Drew (13-11, 1-5 Landmark) fell 1-0 in Game 1, before dropping Game 2 of the twin bill, 8-0, in five innings.
Junior catcher
Rebecca Hutsebaut went 3-for-3 at the plate in Game 1, accounting for three of the Rangers' five hits in the 1-0 setback. Junior starting pitcher
Laura D'Ornellas was solid in the circle, allowing one run on six hits and two walks while striking out four Cardinal batters.
Hutsebaut is now hitting .492 (32-for-65), which ranks third in the Landmark Conference.
Catholic (16-11, 5-3) scored the lone run of the first contest in the top of the fourth inning. Freshman right fielder
Phylicia Pellot and Hutsebaut put together back-to-back hits with one out in the home half of the sixth, but Catholic starting pitcher Victoria Capozucca escaped the frame to preserve her eventual five-hit, complete game shutout. Capozucca improved to 12-3 on the mound for the Cardinals.
In Game 2, the Cardinals jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Meanwhile, the Drew bats were struggling against another sharp Catholic starter in Kerri Apicella, who tossed a one-hitter in five innings of work with three walks and five strikeouts.
Senior shortstop
Lexie Forsell broke up the no-hitter with a two-out single in the bottom of the fifth inning, which proved to be the last frame in Game 2.
The Rangers headed right to the bus to embark to Juniata College, where they will take on the Eagles on Sunday, April 13 in a Landmark Conference doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
