MADISON, N.J. (April 17, 2014) – The Drew University men's tennis completed the 2013-14 campaign after dropping the regular season finale, 9-0, to the visiting Catholic University of America on Thursday.
The Cardinals swept doubles action, and continued the momentum into singles play to claim the dual match. First-year head coach
Matthew Brisotti said that despite the shutout, the Rangers played well and showed positive signs heading into a brand new year in 2014-15.
One Ranger will not return to the Drew Tennis Complex, however, as Drew celebrated the career of
Vin Mahon on Senior Day Thursday.
"Vinny was an integral part of three Landmark Conference championships at Drew," said Brisotti C'12, Mahon's teammate in 2011 and 2012. "His service to this program will not soon be forgotten. Aside from the victories on the court, his leadership has left this team with a lot of wisdom and experience from playing with Vinny. It was a pleasure to both coach and play with him."
Mahon closed his Drew career with a 6-1, 6-2 setback at third singles.
Junior
Dereck McMullen pushed his fifth singles opponent to a first-set tiebreaker. Jason Quisberth took the 7-6 win after taking the tiebreaker, 7-2, and following with a 6-0 victory in the second set.
McMullen and freshman
Nick Lantieri dropped a hard-fough match at third doubles, 8-5, to Brian Bradley and Rocky Alaqbani of Catholic.
Lantieri finished an impressive rookie campaign with an 8-6 loss at sixth singles, which was played as a superset with time constraints toward the end of the dual match.
Junior
Tommy Butschi best exemplified the Rangers' never-quit attitude on Thursday. After dropping the first set at second singles, 6-2, the Drew junior battled to a 6-4 loss in the second set as Catholic continued their roll through singles play.
"It was one of those matches where the final score wasn't indicative of the level of play," Brisotti said. "These guys all fought hard. Everyone is determined to return next year to try and improve the final record, and I think there is enough determination and talent to do that."
