Rangers Split Senior Day Doubleheader with Blue Jays

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Madison, N.J. (April 18, 2014) – The Drew University softball team (15-13, 3-7) played host to Elizabethtown College (12-16, 6-6) in a Landmark Conference doubleheader. The Rangers took game one by a score of 5-4 and dropped game two of the doubleheader 6-1.

Junior Antoinette Tovar finished the day batting .400 (2-for-5). Tovar recorded two RBI singles and scored a run on the afternoon. Freshman Meghan McGuire also batted .400 on the day for the Rangers. Meghan drove in a run and scored a run in the game one victory. Helen Mustafa finished her day at the plate going 2-for-5 and was the only Ranger to record a hit in both games of the doubleheader.

Elizabethtown jumped out to a 1-0 in the top of the second when Kaylee Werner hit a home run into center field. The Blue Jays scored their second run of the game to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the third on a triple from Becky Becher that scored Kelsey Brown who singled through the left side to lead off the inning. A sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth by Keli Krause scored the third run of the game for the Blue Jays extending their lead to 3-0.

The Rangers pulled within one in the home half of the fourth scoring two runs on back-to-back RBI singles from McGuire and Tovar. The Blue Jays answered with a run in the top of the fifth to take a 4-2 lead. With runners on first and second in the bottom of the sixth Tovar delivered a single up the middle cutting the Blue Jay lead to one, 4-3. Next batter Lexie Forsell hit a grounder to the second baseman that drove home the tying run. A sacrifice fly by freshman Phylicia Pellot scored the go-ahead and eventual game-winning run.

The Blue Jays controlled game two jumping out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. Kaylee Werner and Kelsey Brown both recorded RBI singles in the inning for the Blue Jays. Elizabethtown increased their lead to 3-0 in the second inning when Payton Marunich reached on a fielder's choice that would plate Kristin Blass who led off the inning with a single. Rebecca Hutsebaut got the Rangers on the board in the third with a single into left center that would plate Forsell. Elizabethtown would score three more runs in the top of the sixth to take a 6-1 lead that they would not relinquish.

Junior Laura D'Ornellas made her 10th start of the season in the circle for the Rangers in game one. Laura went the full game earning four runs on 10 hits en route to picking up her sixth win of the season. Freshman Casey Zdanek made her fifth start on the year for Drew in game two. Zdanek went 5.1 innings surrendering six runs on 11 hits. Kristin Zeigler went 1.2 innings in relief for the Rangers on the afternoon. Kristin allowed four hits while holding the Blue Jay offense scoreless.

Drew returns to action on Wednesday April 23 at 2:00 p.m. as they host Centenary in a non-conference doubleheader here at the Rangers Softball Complex.
