Box Score NEW YORK, N.Y. (April 22, 2014) – The Drew University baseball team helped fight the battle against breast cancer, but lost a non-conference battle at The College of Staten Island, 7-4, on Tuesday evening.
For the fifth straight season, the Rangers participated in the Dolphins' Grace Hillery Breast Cancer Awareness Night. The College of Staten Island's victory gives them a 3-2 advantage over Drew on Grace Hillery Night. The fundraising and awareness effort has raised over $50,000 over the past 11 years. Tuesday's night grand donation and fundraising total was $6,419.
The Rangers chipped in by donating the entirety of their meal money for the evening, and donned pink Drew baseball caps and pink athletic tape during the contest.
Drew also was also the first to chip away at a scoreless draw that lasted through four innings. Sophomore second baseman
Anthony Feltre reached on a one-out single in the top of the fifth, stole second and ended up on third after a Dolphins' throwing error. Senior catcher
Matthew Kaplon scored Feltre for the 1-0 lead via sacrifice bunt.
The Dolphins wouldn't sink too far. CSI bounced back in the bottom half of the inning after smacking an RBI double to deep center field to tie the score at 1-1.
CSI kept the momentum rolling into the bottom of the sixth with two runs to take a 3-1 lead.
With a little help from the Dolphins' defense and compounded by some clutch Ranger hitting, the seesaw rocked in the opposite direction as Drew took a 4-3 lead with three runs in the top of the seventh.
With the bases loaded, a dropped fly ball allowed Kaplon to score to cut the lead to 3-2. Freshman designated hitter
Jonathan Rodrigues followed with a sacrifice fly to tie the game, and junior right fielder
Al Krause capped the three-run rally with a hard-hit RBI single through the left side for the 4-3 lead.
The Dolphins refused to be held down on an emotional night. Anthony Hillery, the son of Grace Hillery, whose life was lost to breast cancer in 2004 when Anthony was a junior on the Dolphins' baseball team, gave a speech thanking everyone in attendance. Amidst the seventh inning stretch, fans were treated to a rousing rendition of Amazing Grace.
The Dolphins rallied for four runs in the bottom of the eight to pull ahead, and would hold on in the ninth despite Kowalski getting himself in scoring position with his 18
th stolen base of the season, which moved him into an eighth place tie in the school record books for steals in a single season.
Rodrigues, sophomore third baseman
Mike Klinger and freshman outfielder
Mike Di Donato all registered two hits in the setback on the road.
Drew returns to action on Wednesday, April 23 at 3:30 p.m. when they host crosstown rivals FDU-Florham at Doc Young Field. Drew Hillel will be sponsoring Nickel Kosher Hot Dog Day while supplies last as the Rangers take on the Devils.
