Rangers Weather Cyclones for Non-Conference Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MADISON, N.J. (April 23, 2014) – The Drew University softball team (16-14) split a non-conference doubleheader with Centenary (11-22) at the Drew Softball Complex on Wednesday afternoon. The Rangers dropped Game 1, 3-2, and turned around for a 10-0 victory in the second game of the twin bill.

"Game one was a tough loss for us," said head coach Charlotte Labate. "We didn't seem to be as aggressive at the plate like we have been in our previous games. The biggest difference between the two games was our mindset at the plate. In Game 2, we turned it around and were actually looking to get hits from top to bottom."

Senior Lexie Forsell finished her day at the plate batting .571 (4-for-7) with two doubles. Forsell also scored three runs for the Rangers on the day and recorded one RBI. Junior catcher Rebecca Hutsebaut also batted .571 at the dish (4-for-7) for Drew on the afternoon. Rebecca also scored two runs and drove in another.

Drew jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Laura D'Ornellas, who finished the day batting .800 (4-for-5), singled down the third base line to plate Helen Mustafa who doubled into left center to lead off the inning. With two outs in the top of the fourth the Cyclones scored their first run of the game on an Erin Walsh single up the middle to even the score 1-1.

Forsell singled into center field with one out in the fifth inning then advanced to third after an over-throw on her steal attempt. Hutsebaut would then single up the middle to score the Rangers second run of the game. Centenary scored two runs in the top of the seventh and held the Rangers scoreless in their final attempts at the plate for the 3-2 game one victory.

The Rangers offense exploded in Game 2, scoring 10 runs on 13 hits. The 10 runs were the second-highest run total for the team on the season.

"Lexie, Phylicia and Rebecca were aggressive," Labate said. "They stepped up to the plate looking for hits and delivered for us."

Forsell, Pellot and Hutsebaut bat 1, 2 and 3 in the Rangers line-up and all finished Game 2 batting 2-for-3.

Forsell led off the first inning with a double into left center and advanced to third when the Centenary left fielder overthrew the cutoff. On the very next pitch Phylicia Pellot tripled into right center to plate Forsell. Pellot finished the doubleheader 3-for-7, scored one run and recorded two RBIs. Junior Kate McNamara would then single home Pellot to give the Rangers a 2-0 lead with just one out in the inning.

The Rangers tacked on four more runs taking a 6-0 lead into the second. A sacrifice fly in the second and a triple from junior Antoinette Tovar highlighted the final four Ranger runs. Tovar concluded her day at the plate batting .600 (3-for-5) with a run scored and one RBI.

D'Ornellas made her 12th appearance of the season in the circle for the Rangers in Game 1. The junior pitcher went all seven innings surrendering just four hits while striking out a season-high seven batters in the loss. Freshman Casey Zdanek made her sixth start of the season for the Rangers in Game 2. On the way to her fourth win of the season, Zdanek went three innings, allowed one hit and struck out two batters. Sophomore Kristin Zeigler pitched the final two innings in relief for Drew in the second game. She allowed just one hit and held the Cyclone offense scoreless.

The Rangers return to action on Thursday, April 24, as they travel to Bronxville, N.Y. for a non-conference clash with Sarah Lawrence College. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
