Rangers Drop Final Conference Series to Crusaders

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Selinsgrove, Pa. (April 26, 2014) – The Drew University softball team (18-16, 3-9) suffered two Landmark Conference losses this afternoon at the hands of the Susquehanna Crusaders (21-14, 12-0). Susquehanna defeated Drew 6-2 in game one and 4-3 in game two.

Junior Antoinette Tovar completed her day at the plate going 3-for-6 in the two game series for a batting average of .500. Tovar was one of four Rangers to pick up a hit in both games of the doubleheader and one of three to record a RBI on the day. Classmate Kate McNamara finished her day batting .333 (2-for-6) and recorded a RBI.

The Crusaders took game one of the doubleheader 6-2, using a our-run first inning to push them out in front of the Rangers with a lead they would not surrender. The Susquehanna half of the first was highlighted by Amanda Neveroski, who led off the inning with a triple. Susquehanna added two insurance runs in the home half of the fifth to take a 6-0 lead. The Rangers scored their first run of the game in the sixth inning when a wild pitch scooted passed the Crusader catcher and plate Rebecca Hutsebaut, who reached base earlier in the inning after she was hit by a pitch. Drew scored their second and final run of the game in the seventh inning off a Tovar RBI single into right field that scored Meghan McGuire. McGuire reached first with one out in the inning on an infield single to the shortstop.

Game two showcased a pitchers duel between freshmen. Casey Zdanek went four innings allowing four runs on four hits while striking out three batters while Susquehanna freshman Jamie Fesinstine went the complete game allowing three runs on six hits.

The Rangers struck first in game two when McNamara singled through the right to plate senior Lexie Forsell who singled up the middle to lead off the game. Susquehanna answered scoring three runs in the bottom of the second to take a 3-1 lead. A RBI single from Zdanek and a hit batter scored two runs for the Rangers in the third tied the game 3-3. The Crusaders scored the go-ahead and eventual game-winning run in the fourth on a Sarah Bush RBI grounder.

Junior Laura D'Ornellas pitched game one of the afternoon for the Rangers making her 12th start of the season.  D'Ornellas allowed six runs on eight hits while striking out six Crusaders in the loss. Sophomore Kristin Zeigler pitched two innings in relief for the Rangers in game two. Kristin surrendered just two hit on the day and held the Crusader offense scoreless.

The Rangers finished their 2014 regular season campaign with an overall record of 18-16, recording the most wins by a Drew softball team since 2008. The Rangers scored 159 runs, eighth most in school history, on 281 hits, third most in school history, and tallied 139 RBIs, sixth most in school history.
