Box Score MADISON, N.J. (April 3, 2014) – The Drew University baseball team battled with SUNY of Old Westbury through the majority of Thursday's non-conference contest at Doc Young Field, but the Panthers scored nine runs in the final two innings to walk off the Rangers' diamond with a 10-0 win.
Junior starter
Leo Ruiz pitched valiantly into the fifth inning, holding Old Westbury to one run on four hits. Senior
Dominic Reyes, traditionally an outfielder for the Rangers, tossed three innings of four-hit baseball, but one of the hits cleared the fence to give the Panthers a 4-0 lead in the eighth inning.
"We competed very well for a full seven innings," head coach
Brian Hirschberg said. "Our starting pitcher gave us a great chance to win the game, and that's all we can ask of our starting pitcher. Leo was effective and gave us that chance. Dom came in playing a role he's not quite comfortable with just yet, and did a great job working out of some early trouble."
Ruiz worked his way out of a jam in the top of the third inning, when Old Westbury had runners on second and third with just one out after a successful sacrifice bunt. Junior shortstop
Steve Kowalski then backed up his starting pitcher by throwing out a runner at home as junior catcher
Robert Auletti held on after a collision at the plate.
The Rangers' starter coaxed a force out to end the inning and keep the game scoreless.
The Panthers broke the deadlock in the top of the fourth. A leadoff double was moved to third after a groundout, and Old Westbury took a 1-0 lead on a sharp single that just hopped by Kowalski at short.
After Feltre's single in the first, Panthers' starting pitcher Braylin Perez held the Rangers hitless over the next four innings.
"They had a pitcher that didn't allow us to get comfortable," Hirschberg said. "Then we were late into the game and didn't have the lead, so that put some pressure on our hitters. We needed that lead, but give credit to their pitcher."
Reyes came on in relief with one out in the fourth and also tiptoed out of a jam of his own in the fifth. The Panthers had runners on second and third with one out, and again failed to score.
Reyes got a strikeout and a groundout to keep the Panther lead at 1-0.
Sophomore first baseman
Bobby Miskura picked up Drew's second hit of the game in the home half of the sixth, and became only the second Ranger to reach scoring position. Miskura was stranded on base as Perez continued his scoreless outing.
The Panthers increased their advantage in the top of the eighth frame with three runs on three hits, including a leadoff triple. The rout was on in the ninth when the Panthers' Jonathan Pagan launched a three-run home run over the left field bushes for the 7-0 lead.
Old Westbury tacked on three more runs, one of which was unearned, to take the 10-0 lead into the bottom of the ninth.
Drew resumes Landmark Conference play on Friday when The Catholic University of America comes to Doc Young Field for a nine-inning make-up from last weekend's washout. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m
