Box Score 2 BETHLEHEM, Pa. (April 3, 2014) – Junior catcher
Rebecca Hutsebaut extended her hitting streak to eight games, but the Drew University softball team could not overcome two fast starts by Moravian College as the Greyhounds swept a Landmark Conference doubleheader on Thursday afternoon in Bethlehem, Pa.
Drew fell 7-2 in Game 1 before being shut out 8-0 in six innings in the second game.
With an RBI single in Game 1, and a 2-for-3 stint at the plate in the second game of the twin bill, Hutsebaut has now hit safely in eight straight games while extending her streak of reaching base to 11 games.
"Rebecca has always been a good hitter," head coach
Charlotte Labate said. "She is just finding any way to connect with the ball. It can be anything from a pop-up that finds a hole to a line drive down the third baseline. She has a lot of power, which is why I stand in the outfield instead of the coach's box when she's batting."
Game 1 The Rangers (12-8, 1-3 Landmark) fell behind early in Game 1 as a three-run home run helped the Greyhounds get out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning.
Hutsebaut's RBI single came in the top of the third inning, plating freshman second baseman
Meghan McGuire to cut the Moravian lead to 5-1.
The Greyhounds (11-5, 2-2 Landmark) added a run in both the third and fifth innings to stretch the lead to 7-1. The Rangers got one back in the top of the seventh, but Moravian limited the damage to take Game 1 by a score of 7-2.
Sophomore
Kristin Ziegler knocked a double and scored Drew's second run in the seventh, while junior third baseman
Kate McNamara went 2-for-3.
Game 2 Hutsebaut continued to lead the Rangers at the plate, getting her team-best eighth multi-hit game this season in the second contest of the conference doubleheader.
However, there was not enough offense from the Ranger bats as Moravian earned the four-hit shutout and an 8-0 victory in six innings.
Freshman starting pitcher
Casey Zdanek held the Greyhounds off the scoreboard in the first inning, but Moravian scored at least a run in the second through sixth frames to pull away as starting pitcher Lix Tillou twirled the shutout.
Drew continues Landmark Conference play on Saturday with a trip to Juniata College for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
