Softball's Season Ends at Stockton in ECAC's

Box Score POMONA, N.J. (May 7, 2014) – The 2014 season officially came to a close for the seventh-seeded Drew University softball team in the ECAC Division III Metro Championships with a 5-0 loss at No. 2 Richard Stockton College on Wednesday afternoon.

The Ospreys (22-15) got all of their offense in one inning, the fateful fourth, to knock the Rangers (18-17) out of the tournament and advance to the weekend's double-elimination tournament for the final four teams in the ECAC Metro field.

Freshman starting pitcher Casey Zdanek took the loss on the mound, but only allowed one earned run after two errors derailed the Rangers in the fourth inning. The Drew rookie walked none in 3.2 innings, and gave up six of her seven hits allowed in the five-run fourth inning.

With the two opposing starting pitchers locked in a duel to start the game, Drew got its first hit – and only hit of the contest – in the top of the fourth inning off a bunt single from freshman right fielder Phylicia Pellot. The leadoff single would be erased after the freshman was caught stealing to make the second out of the inning.

The Ospreys cracked the deadlock in their half of the fourth with three hits before a single out was recorded. Richard Stockton ended up plating five runs on six hits and two Drew errors in the inning to take a 5-0 lead while leaving the bases loaded to end the decisive frame.

The run support would be all that Stockton starting pitcher Michelle Pietrocola would need. The Osprey's senior starter won her 13th game of the season after allowing just two base runners on Wednesday. Pellot's hit was followed by a Kristin Zeigler walk for the Rangers' only offense of the game.

Zeigler, a sophomore pitcher, entered the game to get the final out of the fourth inning and held Stockton scoreless on four hits, no walks and two strikeouts over the final 2.1 innings.
