No. 5: Cailin Abrahams Rides to Equestrian's 1st Novice Flat Regional ChampionshipÂ
It all has to come together perfectly to make your mark on history. That's exactly what happened for sophomore
Cailin Abrahams of the Drew University equestrian team at the 2014 IHSA Regional Championships on April 6.
Â
Abrahams and the other riders at Regionals are forced to combine their natural skill with the ability to quickly adapt to unfamiliar, and often, uncontrollable circumstances. At this level, the horses for the varying stages of the Novice Flat test are chosen at random. On top of that, you can ride up to three different horses en route to the championship class at the horse show.
Â
The Drew sophomore brilliantly battled the uncertainty and rode
Impy and
Patch to Drew University Equestrian's first ever regional championship in the novice equitation on the flat.
Â
"It was one of Cailin's best performances," said head coach
Karen Sykes. "She was technically sound, and she had great style and show presence. It set her apart from the other riders and that's not something you can teach or define. The riders in novice flat have a vast range of experience. She was competing against girls with a lot of show experience."
Â
Abrahams bested 11 other riders from powerhouses in the region, Centenary (N.J.) College, The United States Military Academy, Marist College and Stevens Institute of Technology.
Â
The regional championship was the culmination of a successful sophomore campaign for Abrahams. She qualified for regionals early in the equestrian season, so she spent the majority of 2013-14 perfecting her craft. During the Rangers' spring break trip to Florida, Abrahams was able to get some riding time in, as well as pick up tips from watching some top-level professionals.
Â
"She applied that education very well," Sykes said. "She is naturally talented, but she learned a lot on that trip."
Â
While the sport can be technically demanding, one of the most difficult aspects of equestrian at this level is dealing with the luck of the draw. Riders are asked to put on their best performance on a horse that they probably have never worked with before. Abrahams took it all in stride.
Â
"You have to be really good at figuring out what that horse is going to be like right from the start," Sykes said. "All of those things came together nicely. It doesn't always happen that way."
Â
Abrahams switched horses after the first heat, and went on to championship class where she survived four more founds of final testing to win the regional crown.
Â
Her championship earned a trip to the IHSA Zone 3 Championships at Centenary, where Abrahams placed eighth in a very competitive field.
