Women's Soccer Drops Opener in OT

Box Score HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (Aug. 29, 2014) – The Drew University women's soccer team erased a 1-0 lead in the 84th minute to force overtime on Friday afternoon, but SUNY-Brockport got the golden goal five minutes in to win the 2014 season opener, 2-1, in the Cyclone Classic hosted by Centenary (N.J.) College.

SUNY-Brockport took the 1-0 lead in the 24th minute, but the Rangers battled back for the equalizer by junior midfielder Mel Santos in the 84th minute and took the 1-1 tie into extra time. At the 94:56 mark, Brockport walked off with the win.

"Considering how new of an experience it was for so many of our players, we are overall very pleased," said head coach Christa Racine. "No one likes to lose and our goal is to get better every game. I liked the effort from the young players. They showed they are eager to compete."

The Rangers (0-1) were on the defensive early as Brockport took the contest's first three shots during the first 11 minutes. Junior forward Emma Campbell produced Drew's first chance at net forcing a Brockport save.

The Golden Eagles kept the pressure on with three more shots on goal, forcing Drew junior goalkeeper Sara Nash to stay on her toes. The junior keeper recorded four saves before Brockport broke through with the season's opening goal.

Drew began the second half with urgency, firing off four early shots and forcing three saves from the Golden Eagles keeper.

Nash kept her squad in the game coming up with save after save. Her 14 saves on Friday are tied for the seventh most ever in a single game in Drew history.

"Sara had a solid performance," Racine said. "She made the routine saves and showed assertiveness when necessary, which was nice to see early in the season."

A save late in the game to hold the deficit at 1-0 was nothing routine. Nash leaped to tip a high shot over the bar to keep the Rangers within reachable distance.

Nash's goalkeeping, along with some careful persistence led to Drew's late equalizer. Junior midfielder Shannon Slowey swung in a cross from a corner kick and found Santos, who scored the Rangers' first goal of the season with a well-placed, upper 90's header.

"We had a nice buildup to get to that point," Racine said. "We had a nice opportunity from Campbell that was blocked wide to set up the corner. We did a much better job of getting into the box and making our own chances. It was a great goal by Mel."

Both sides would hold the draw for the final six minutes to force overtime. Five minutes in, the Golden Eagles found a hole in the Ranger defense and put the game away with the Golden Goal.

Drew will play in the consolation round of the Cyclone Classic on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
