Box Score HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (Aug. 30, 2014) – August 30 has become Hat Trick Day for junior
Emma Campbell of the Drew University women's soccer team.
The junior striker recorded the 15
th hat trick in program history in the Rangers' 4-0 shutout of Alvernia University on Saturday afternoon in the consolation round of the Cyclone Classic at Centenary (N.J.) College. The 14
th hat trick was recorded exactly one year ago on Aug. 30 by Campbell in Drew's 5-4 defeat of Elizabethtown College.
Junior goalkeeper
Sara Nash and sophomore keeper
Andee Higgins combined on the shutout as Drew improves to 1-1 on the season.
"We demonstrated the ability to compete today," said head coach
Christa Racine. "Emma did a fantastic job going to goal and it paid off for the team."
Campbell didn't waste much time getting Drew on the scoreboard first. The co-captain got her first of three in the seventh minute when she received a ball with her back to goal, touched to the left and struck the side netting from 15 yards out.
Nash then went to work to help keep the lead with a slew of saves, the second straight night the keeper posted gaudy save numbers. She followed up 14 saves in the first round of the Cyclone Classic with nine more on Saturday.
Nash and the Rangers received a little breathing room when freshman
Samantha Garzon scored her first collegiate goal to give Drew a 2-0 lead in the 39
th minute. Sophomore defender
Sam McFarlane started the play with a long ball into the box. Junior midfielder
Mel Santos wisely flicked the ball on to Garzon, who slotted it home.
One minute and 19 seconds later, Campbell struck again with what has become a patented goal by the Drew star. She received a ball over the defense and turned on the burners for a 40-yard dash to sprint by the Knights' defense and put the ball away for the 3-0 lead heading into halftime.
Chances were limited for both sides to open the second half. Higgins took over between the pipes in the 74
th minute and added two saves to help preserve the clean sheet.
Campbell wasn't done, however. She notched the hat trick in the 75
th minute when she came up with the ball after a scrum with the defense and goalkeeper in front of the Alvernia net. Campbell slid it home to set the final score at 4-0.
"We are looking forward to learning from our mistakes this weekend and coming back strong in our Fall Fest," Racine concluded.
The 2014 Fall Festival gets underway at Ranger Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 6 at noon when Drew hosts Penn St.-Behrend.
