Box Score MADISON, N.J. (Sept. 13, 2014) — The Drew University women's soccer team fell to in-state rival Richard Stockton College, 1-0, in non-conference action on a rainy Saturday afternoon at Ranger Stadium.
The decisive tally came in the 49
th minute for the Ospreys just as the rain began to pick up in Madison. Stockton took advantage of a quick counterattack when a defender threaded a pass into the Drew defensive corner, and the ensuing cross led to a one-time strike that grazed off junior goalkeeper
Sara Nash's fingers and into the top right corner of the net.
Freshman forward
Samantha Garzon put both of her shots on goal for the Rangers in the setback.
In the first half, the visiting team took control of the ball and immediately started putting the Ranger defense to work. The Ospreys were able to get two shots off within the opening six minutes. As the minutes ticked off the clock and both teams exchanged attacks, Nash continued to dazzle and show why she is one of the top statistical keepers in the country. She collected six saves in the first half, including a leaping tip over the crossbar to prevent a Stockton goal in the 27
th minute.
Soon after the first tally on the scoreboard, both teams had to compete with the break in the clouds as rain fell on Ranger Stadium. Less than 10 minutes after the Stockton goal, the Ospreys fired a shot that hit the top right post and missed an opportunity to take a 2-0 lead.
With back and forth plays by both squads, and the rain picking up in intensity, the Ospreys once again had a scoring opportunity foiled by the crossbar and ricocheted back into the middle of the 18-yard box where the Rangers cleared it out.
Midway through the second half, sophomore goalkeeper
Ryan Jackson entered the game, and in the 88
th minute came off of her goal line and staved off a potential Stockton fast break. Jackson's defensive play fueled the women in Blue and Green and in the 85
th minute, junior captain
Emma Campbell crossed a ball to a sprinting
Shannon Slowey, but the Stockton keeper came out on the cross to disrupt the Rangers' scoring play.
Stockton outshot the Rangers 20-3 by game's end and led in corner kicks 4-2. The Rangers goalkeeping duo of Nash and Jackson collected nine saves, with Nash getting the majority with seven.
Drew women's soccer returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 17 with a non-conference road match at Manhattanville College at 7:00 p.m.
