Cossu's 1st Career Goal Gives Drew 1-0 Road Win

Box Score PURCHASE, N.Y. (Sept. 27, 2014) — Freshman midfielder Dan Cossu's first career goal went down as a game-winner and senior goalkeeper Michael Reyes notched the sixth shutout of the season as the Drew University men's soccer team topped Manhattanville College in non-conference action on road Saturday evening.

Reyes was credited with the 23rd shutout of his career, which is now tied for sixth in the record books for career shutouts. Cossu tallied his first career goal, which proved to be the game winner in his home state of New York.

In the 60th minute of a scoreless game, junior defender Matt Sommer crossed the ball into the Valiants' 18-yard box, where a streaking Cossu was able to get his head connected with the ball and sent it to the upper left corner of the net.

Throughout what was a chippy game, both teams exchanged attacks, but Reyes was able to anchor his defense and keep the Valiants off the board. Sommer pulled double duty by taking control of Manhattanville's botched scoring opportunities in the defensive end and creating offense for the Rangers.

"Our defense stay composed and pulled together when it counted the most," head coach Lenny Armuth said. "Throughout the season Reyes has been consistent and has really been able to be the game changer from game to game."

Although statistically Manhattanville outshot the Rangers 14-9, it was the quality of the shots that really made the difference. The Rangers were able to get five shots on goal to Manhattanville's four. Cossu's goal was his first shot of his career in his second career game.

"Tonight was a great way for Dan to get his career started," Armuth said. "He's been working hard, and today it translated onto the field."

Tonight's win also pulled Reyes up in the record book and is now tied for ninth in career wins with 23. The Rangers return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 1 when they take on St. Joseph's (N.Y.) College in Patchogue, N.Y.
