MADISON, N.J. (Oct. 17, 2015) – Following nearly 106 minutes of scoreless soccer, senior midfielder
Melanie Santos delivered the Golden Goal from the penalty spot to give the Drew University women's soccer team a 1-0 victory over Goucher College in Landmark Conference play on Saturday afternoon at Ranger Stadium.
With just two games remaining in the 2015 conference schedule, The Rangers (6-8-1, 2-3 Landmark) put themselves in good position for one of the top four spots in the Landmark Championships in November and the ability to control their own destiny. Santos netted her second goal of the season after a handball was called on Goucher (7-6-2, 1-4) in the penalty box following a corner kick taken by Drew freshman
Caroline Kelly. The referee pointed at the spot, and Drew's senior captain stepped up and buried a shot to the low right corner.
The Gophers held an advantage in shots (6-3) and possession in the first half, but the tide turned after intermission. The Rangers turned up the heat on the Goucher back line with 10 second-half shots. The best chance to wrap the game up in regulation came in the 83
rd minute, when sophomore defender
Thalia Santacruz bombed a shot off the crossbar, keeping the game scoreless as they inched toward overtime.
Each side took two shots in extra time, with Santos' penalty kick sealing the deal in the 106
th minute. Senior
Sara Nash and junior
Andee Higgins split the shutout in goal on Saturday. Nash made a save in the first half, and Higgins earned the win by making four saves throughout the second half and both overtime periods.
Senior forward
Emma Campbell led the Drew attack on goal with all four of her shots forcing saves by the Goucher keeper, who totaled eights stops. Santos was also perfect with her accuracy on the day, placing two shots on goal.
The Rangers hit the road on Wednesday, Oct. 21 for a non-conference contest at Rutgers-Newark at 7:30 p.m.
